The Community Resource Specialist plays a vital role in this mission by connecting clients with essential resources and supporting them on their path to independence.


Role Overview

The Veterans Resource Specialist works directly with low-income veteran families, offering a range of supportive services to prevent homelessness and promote stability. This role includes outreach, case management, and assistance with accessing VA and other community benefits. The Specialist collaborates with service providers, conducts housing inspections, and ensures client confidentiality throughout the service process.


Key Responsibilities

1. Case Management and Support

  • Provide comprehensive case management to program participants, including follow-up support after emergency services are provided.
  • Develop and implement individualized housing and service plans tailored to each participant's needs.
  • Monitor participant progress and provide ongoing support to promote housing stability and self-sufficiency.

2. Resource Navigation

  • Assist participants in identifying and applying for mainstream benefits such as TANF, VA, SSI, FS, CDC, Medicaid, WIC, and MI-Child.
  • Conduct outreach and advocacy to connect participants with appropriate community and VA resources.
  • Facilitate credit counseling and other support services to address barriers to housing.

3. Housing Search and Placement

  • Assist participants in locating, securing, and retaining safe and affordable housing.
  • Conduct habitability standards inspections to ensure rental units meet program and safety requirements.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with landlords and housing providers.

4. Compliance and Data Management

  • Document case notes in a timely manner, complete required program documentation, and maintain accurate client records in the agency’s database.
  • Conduct data collection and evaluation using the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).
  • Ensure compliance with program guidelines and reporting requirements.

5. Professional Development and Collaboration

  • Participate in training sessions, workshops, and personal development activities to stay informed about program updates and best practices.
  • Collaborate with the Veterans Services Coordinator, team members, and community partners to enhance service delivery.
  • Travel within the service district as needed.

6. Other Duties as Assigned

  • Adapt to organizational needs by taking on additional responsibilities that support the agency’s mission and goals.

Qualifications


Required


  • Associate’s degree in Human Services
  • Social Work, or a related field, or equivalent experience with comprehensive family support networks or veteran-related programs.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a related role.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry systems. Valid Michigan driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. Successful clearance of DHS Central Registry and Criminal History Record Check.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Military background or prior experience working with veterans.
