Overview
The Veterinary Assistant assists, supports, and helps Veterinarians in providing medical and technical support in the health care of animals at the city's animal shelters.
Essential Functions
1 Prepares for and assists veterinarians with routine and emergency medical procedures to ensure activities are conducted in an efficient manner; performs microchipping and various intake responsibilities for animals.
2 Collects and prepares biological samples to examine samples under microscope, conducts lab tests, and reports results to veterinarians.
3 Monitors animals' general health while in facilities and vital signs during procedures and while recuperating.
4 Assists veterinarians with and administers prescribed medications to animals in order to provide support and nursing care; calculates dosages for sedation, pain management, and antibiotics.
5 Prepares, sterilizes, and monitors surgical instrument packs and supplies for surgical procedures and treatment; performs euthanasia when needed or requested.
6 Assists in maintaining the inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies and restocks medical kits to ensure supplies are readily available.
7 Evaluates the general condition and disposition of animals to determine which animals have the best chance for adoption.
8 Maintains accurate records on all animals; updates software and systems with correct information.
9 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Thorough knowledge of animal behavior.
2 Knowledge of laboratory equipment and techniques relating to veterinary science.
3 Knowledge of nutrition, care, and handling of animals.
4 Knowledge of animal pharmacology and physiology.
5 Ability to recognize medical symptoms and problems relating to animals.
6 Ability to work effectively with others.
7 Ability to keep medical records on animals.
8 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing
9 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE:
- One (1) year of experience as a veterinary assistant/technician working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter/animal control setting
EQUIVALENCIES:
- An Associate degree (or higher) in an animal/veterinary science or veterinarian technology field will meet the education and experience requirements
- A current Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) certificate issued by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) will meet the education and experience requirements
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Must obtain Euthanasia certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) within probationary period.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- NO Felony drug offenses within the last 10 years
Salary Range
$21.04 - $22.67
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
