Visiting Research Survey Scientist

The University of Illinois is accepting applications for a Visiting Research Survey Scientist in the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL). The Visiting Research Survey Scientist works with researchers and university faculty and staff to develop, evaluate, and implement research protocols involving primary data collection or secondary data sources. Working under the CITL Director of Data Analytics, the Research Survey Scientist will be involved in all phases of the research process, including the development of projects, data collection, analyses, and dissemination with a lens towards best practices and inclusion in all projects. This position will contribute to the body of knowledge on sense of belonging, learning analytics, cultural competencies, climate, and other related topics.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide consulting to principal investigators, university students, and faculty to develop appropriate data collection strategies, leveraging current survey research practices, to achieve their research objectives.
- Work with principal investigators and other university faculty and staff to develop and enforce standard operating procedures for data collection, formatting, sharing, and reporting including both quantitative and qualitative research data.
- Manage and organize data collection and other strategies that optimize inclusion, statistical efficiency, and data quality, creating sample disposition reports, response rates, survey methodology reports that describe survey techniques and results, and other measures of data quality.
- Develop and conduct learning analytics that informs generalizable research on teaching and learning practices.
- Develop dashboards and visualizations to highlight findings and to support research teams objectives.
- Contribute to creating and updating IRB applications and serving as a member of the research team on projects.
- Keep abreast of developments in, data science, statistics, and survey research methodologies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in social or behavioral science or related discipline.
- At least one year of work experience working with principal investigators measuring human behavior and relationships.
- Proven ability to generate data analytics and visualizations to highlight research findings and to support high-level strategies.
- Proven ability to manage complex datasets.
- Current in-depth knowledge and experience with online survey design tools such as Alchemer or Qualtrics
- Proficiency in at least one commonly used statistical program such as, SPSS, SAS, STATA, or R.
- Familiarity with visualization tools, such as R shiny, Tableau, PowerBI, or related software
- Excellent analytical, writing, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of best practices in survey methodology and questionnaire design.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a collegial framework and to collaborate effectively as well as the ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision.
- Attention to detail and sound judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
- PHD in social or behavioral science related discipline.
- Successful experience writing scholarly grants.
- Successful publications in peer reviewed journals
- Experience working with Institutional Review Boards
- Professional survey research experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of: SPSS and R software.
- Familiarity with common metadata standards and experience in using and preparing data set documentation and metadata.
- Knowledge of best practices in measurement and statistical analyses of education data.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Visiting Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The salary for this position is $52,000-$55,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
