Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of data science, machine learning and solution engineering. You'll design, build and deploy AI solutions that solve real business problems, unlock insights from complex data, and contribute to AFCA's growing AI maturity.

Reporting to the Technical Data Manager, you will play a key role in designing, developing and operationalising AI and machine learning solutions across AFCA. Working closely with data engineers, architects, business stakeholders and delivery teams, you'll transform business challenges into practical AI solutions that deliver measurable outcomes.

This role is about more than building models. You'll help bridge the gap between analytical concepts and production implementation, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure and aligned with responsible AI principles.

This is initially a 12-month contract position.

What you'll be doing:

  • Design, build and deploy end-to-end AI and machine learning solutions
  • Translate business problems into analytical approaches, model designs and technical solutions
  • Explore and analyse structured and unstructured data to identify trends, patterns and insights
  • Develop, evaluate and optimise machine learning models for classification, prediction and decision support
  • Partner with data and platform engineers to integrate models into enterprise systems and workflows
  • Contribute to AI engineering, MLOps, DevOps and CI/CD practices
  • Support testing, deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement of AI solutions
  • Embed responsible AI principles including fairness, transparency, privacy and explainability
  • Document models, analytical methods and solution designs to support governance and sustainability
  • Communicate complex analytical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
Qualifications

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical capability with excellent stakeholder engagement skills.

You'll have:

  • Experience designing, building and delivering AI, machine learning or advanced analytics solutions in production environments
  • Strong knowledge of statistics, machine learning techniques, model evaluation and experimental design
  • Experience working with both structured and unstructured datasets
  • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL, with experience using version control and modern engineering practices
  • Experience with cloud-based data and AI platforms, ideally Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric and Databricks
  • Exposure to model deployment, monitoring, CI/CD pipelines and MLOps practices
  • Knowledge of data governance, security, privacy and responsible AI principles
  • The ability to translate business needs into practical technical solutions
  • Strong communication, collaboration and stakeholder management skills

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Generative AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP) or optimisation techniques
  • Experience integrating AI solutions with enterprise applications, APIs and workflow platforms
  • Knowledge of model observability, model risk management and AI governance practices
  • Relevant qualifications in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering or similar disciplines
  • Experience working within a complex, regulated or transformation-focused environment
