Job description

Lead Cloud & DevOps Engineer

Sydney | Flexible Hybrid

  • Own the architecture across complex cloud, data and GPU infrastructure
  • Hands-on technical lead with scope to build a team around you
  • High-autonomy scale-up where you set the infrastructure roadmap
About the role

We’re looking for a Lead Cloud & DevOps Engineer to take technical ownership of the infrastructure environment within a growing technology scale-up.

This isn’t a role where you’ll simply implement an existing roadmap or reach for off-the-shelf solutions. You’ll be responsible for designing the architecture, setting the technical direction and remaining hands-on in building it.

A major part of the environment supports a large-scale data processing platform, with multi-region, GPU-intensive workloads running across GCP and Kubernetes.

You’ll initially mentor an existing engineer, with genuine scope to build a Cloud/DevOps team around you as the business grows.

What you'll do

  • Own the cloud and infrastructure architecture and set the technical roadmap.
  • Design solutions from first principles, with a focus on scalability, security and reliability.
  • Own and evolve the Terraform-managed IaC environment.
  • Work across GCP, Kubernetes, Docker and Linux, with Azure on the roadmap.
  • Design and support multi-region, GPU-based infrastructure for large-scale data processing.
  • Work closely with Software Engineers as infrastructure and data requirements evolve.
  • Lead future cloud migrations and solve data residency and sovereignty challenges.
  • Improve CI/CD, automation and repeatable engineering processes.
  • Own infrastructure reliability, performance and incident escalation.
  • Mentor engineers and help build the team as the function grows.
What you'll bring We’re looking for someone methodical, proactive and comfortable making the recommendation, not waiting to be told what to do.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Strong Infrastructure / Systems Engineering foundations with significant Cloud/DevOps experience.
  • Deep hands-on experience with GCP, Azure or AWS, ideally GCP.
  • Strong Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker and Linux experience.
  • Experience making architecture-level decisions, not simply implementing existing designs.
  • Strong CI/CD and DevOps automation experience.
  • Good understanding of security, resilience, reliability and networking.
  • The ability to anticipate future infrastructure requirements and turn them into a clear technical roadmap.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence explaining technical decisions and trade-offs.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or a desire to move further into hands-on technical leadership.
Experience with GPU compute, large-scale data platforms, multi-region architecture or cloud migrations would be particularly valuable.

Why join?

This is a genuine build-and-own opportunity within a scale-up.

You’ll have the autonomy to set the infrastructure roadmap, design the architecture and then build what you've designed, while solving technically interesting challenges across cloud, data and GPU infrastructure.

There’s also a clear opportunity to build a team around you, while remaining a hands-on technical leader.
