Position Overview

The Ontario Public Service is seeking Intermediate Software Developers to support the Central Agencies Cluster. The successful candidates will be responsible for translating business requirements and technical system specifications into reliable, tested enterprise applications.

The role requires strong hands-on experience with Java Enterprise technologies, Java EE, Spring Framework, JPA/Hibernate, databases, application design, deployment, troubleshooting, and unit testing, along with exposure to modern UI frameworks and cloud technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze business requirements and technical system specifications and translate them into working software solutions.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise applications.
  • Develop n-tier enterprise applications using Java Enterprise technologies.
  • Perform hands-on Java EE development, application design, coding, integration, deployment, and troubleshooting.
  • Apply current software architecture principles and design patterns to develop scalable and maintainable applications.
  • Develop and execute unit tests and support automated testing practices.
  • Develop and maintain applications using JPA/Hibernate and Spring Framework.
  • Design and work with relational databases, SQL queries, and stored procedures.
  • Troubleshoot application, database, integration, and deployment issues.
  • Develop and maintain web-based user interfaces using JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, technical teams, architects, QA professionals, and other project stakeholders.
  • Participate in Agile development practices, where applicable.
  • Support web services, service-oriented architecture, cloud-based solutions, and business process management initiatives.

Requirements

Mandatory Skills & Experience

Candidates must demonstrate the following:

Java Enterprise Development

  • 7+ years of experience developing n-tier enterprise applications.
  • 7+ years of hands-on development experience with Java Enterprise technologies.
  • Extensive hands-on development and troubleshooting experience on the Java EE platform.
  • Strong expertise in application design, current/latest design patterns, deployment, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience developing, testing, deploying, and supporting enterprise-scale applications.
  • Strong experience with unit testing.
JPA / Hibernate & Spring

  • Expertise with JPA or Hibernate.
  • Strong experience with the Spring Framework.
  • Experience with Spring technologies such as Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Batch, and/or Spring Security is highly relevant.
Database Technologies

  • Proficient experience working with various databases.
  • Strong SQL development experience.
  • Experience writing SQL and stored procedures.
  • Experience with databases such as:
    • Amazon Aurora
    • Amazon RDS
    • PostgreSQL
    • Oracle
    • PL/SQL
    • MySQL
    • Cosmos DB
  • Expertise with Amazon Aurora, RDS, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and PL/SQL is highly desirable.

Development Tools

  • Proficiency working with Eclipse IDE or Rational Application Developer (RAD).
Front-End / UI Development

  • Experience with modern JavaScript / TypeScript frameworks, including one or more of:
    • React
    • Angular
    • jQuery
Evaluation Criteria

1. Technical Expertise – 40%

Candidates will be assessed on:

  • 7+ years developing n-tier enterprise applications.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience with Java Enterprise technologies.
  • Java EE development, application design, design patterns, deployment, troubleshooting, and unit testing.
  • Experience with ORM technologies including JPA, Hibernate, or MyBatis.
2. Spring Framework – 15%

  • Hands-on experience with the Spring Framework.
  • Experience with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Batch, Spring Security, and related Spring technologies.
3. Database Management – 15%

  • Strong SQL development experience.
  • Experience writing stored procedures.
  • Experience with Oracle, PL/SQL, Cosmos DB, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
  • Experience with Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS is highly desirable.
4. Cloud & BPM – 20%

Experience with AWS cloud technologies, including:

  • Aurora Serverless
  • Amazon Athena
  • Amazon S3
  • Amazon ElastiCache
  • Amazon OpenSearch
Business Process Management experience with technologies such as:

  • Camunda BPM
  • Drools Rule Engine
Additional relevant BPM experience includes:

  • jBPM
  • Activiti
  • IBM Process Server
5. UI Development – 10%

  • Experience developing web applications using:
    • React
    • Angular
    • jQuery
Nice-to-Have Qualifications

The following experience will be considered an asset:

  • Agile development experience, including:
    • Scrum
    • User Stories
    • Continuous Integration (CI)
    • Test-Driven Development (TDD)
    • Automated Testing
  • Experience developing Web Services.

  • Experience with fine-grained security frameworks such as:

    • Spring Security
    • Apache Shiro
    • ForgeRock
Work Arrangement & Schedule

This is a mandatory 100% onsite position.

The successful candidate must:

  • Work onsite five (5) days per week at 222 Jarvis St., Toronto, Ontario.
  • Work 7.25 hours per calendar day, excluding lunch.
  • Be available Monday through Friday.
  • Work within the standard working hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Be able to meet the client's onsite attendance requirements throughout the assignment.
