Department Information

This is a Temporary Aide position so applications will be considered from residents and non-residents of Colorado. Non-Colorado residents must establish Colorado residency upon accepting the position

This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.

An eligibility list may be established with this recruitment and could be used to fill similar positions within the Colorado Department of Public Safety in the next 12 months.

About the Work Unit

The mission of the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control to be the Nation’s premier state fire organization by acting with foresight, providing bold leadership, enhancing our partnerships, and exemplifying the highest level of professionalism in fire prevention and protection, while building a safe and supportive work environment for our employees.

The Center of Excellence (COE) drives technological advancements to improve firefighting practices and influence innovation across the public safety community.

Work Environment
  • Hybrid position. Days in office to be coordinated with supervisor.

About the Position

Key Responsibilities

On-Site Training Event Leadership and Issue Resolution

  • Serve as the CoE on-site point of contact for NFA course deliveries nationwide and maintain continuity throughout each training event.
  • Monitor training delivery and resolve real-time issues that could disrupt the event, coordinating appropriate support without assuming lead-instructor, site-logistics, or student-enrollment responsibilities.
  • Maintain clear communication among instructors, students, the UAS Projects Manager, and CoE staff to support a professional and effective training environment.
Instructor Support and Course Delivery
  • Support instructors with course-delivery needs during training and help remove barriers that affect instruction, demonstrations, or field activities.
  • Coordinate with the instructor cadre and UAS Projects Manager to support consistent use of approved course materials, methods, and CoE delivery standards.
  • Identify instructor support needs during each event and facilitate timely resolution or escalation when additional program resources are required.
Student Support and Training Environment
  • Monitor student needs, questions, and concerns on-site and assist participants in obtaining appropriate information or support during the course.
  • Address or elevate participant issues that may affect the learning environment, course participation, or successful completion of training activities.
  • Support a safe, professional training environment during classroom and field portions of the course, including work in outdoor and variable conditions.
Course Quality Assurance and Program Coordination
  • Observe training delivery for consistency with CoE and NFA course standards and communicate significant issues to the UAS Projects Manager.
  • Coordinate with instructors and program leadership on course quality, recurring delivery needs, and opportunities to improve consistency across nationwide course locations.
  • Document notable deviations, recurring concerns, and successful practices that should be addressed or incorporated into future training deliveries.

After-Action Reporting and Program Improvement

  • Provide timely after-action feedback following each training event, including issues encountered, resolutions implemented, and lessons learned.
  • Identify trends and recurring support needs across course deliveries and provide observations that inform program improvements and instructor support.
  • Maintain concise records of significant event issues and recommended improvements for review by the UAS Projects Manager and CoE leadership.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • Non-Colorado residents must establish Colorado residency upon accepting the position.
  • Ability to travel extensively nationwide, including overnight and multi-day trips with hotel lodging, for approximately 12 weeks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in spoken English with instructors, students, and program staff.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate rental vehicles while in travel status.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Ability to lift and carry UAS equipment and related gear weighing up to 45 lbs.
    • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and terrain.
    • Ability to stand, walk, and work on uneven ground for extended periods.
    • Ability to travel by vehicle and, at times, aircraft to training locations nationwide.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Experience in a public safety discipline, including fire, law enforcement, or search and rescue.
  • Wildland fire operations background.
  • Prior UAS training, instructing, or program-support experience.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field.
