Azure DevOps Engineer
Job description
Salary: £65,000 - 65,000 per year
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience running production Azure environments as a primary discipline, including App Services, Azure SQL, storage and networking fundamentals.
- Experience writing and maintaining CI/CD, build and deployment pipelines in Azure DevOps (YAML), including artifact management, controlled build configurations and pipeline variables.
- Regular use of infrastructure as code (Bicep, ARM or Terraform), with confident PowerShell and Azure CLI scripting skills.
- Strong understanding of secure-by-default platform design, including Key Vault, managed identities, RBAC and least privilege.
- Experience owning monitoring, backup and disaster recovery for a live service, including Application Insights, Log Analytics and incident response.
- Experience working in an Agile Scrum team and familiarity with its ceremonies and artefacts.
- Understanding of SQL Server sufficient to manage environment data, refreshes and test data safely in a relational database system.
- Desirable: Microsoft AZ-104 (Azure Administrator) or AZ-400 (DevOps Engineer Expert) certification.
- Desirable: Experience running or supporting Azure Service Bus, Azure Functions, Azure API Management, Azure Logic Apps, Azure Data Factory, Synapse or Microsoft Fabric.
- Desirable: Enough C#/.NET knowledge to read application code and debug a failing build alongside engineers.
- Desirable: Experience consolidating single-tenant, per-client deployments into a shared multi-tenant platform.
- Desirable: Experience with enterprise client security requirements, such as supplier security reviews, ISO 27001-style controls and penetration-test remediation.
- Desirable: Practical use of AI-assisted tooling in platform and pipeline work.
Responsibilities
- Provision, configure and maintain the Astral development, test, UAT/load and production environments, keeping them consistent, reproducible and documented through infrastructure as code.
- Manage environment refreshes and test data in line with data protection rules.
- Build, maintain and improve Azure DevOps build, test and release pipelines, including artifact management, controlled build configurations, pipeline variables and automated quality and security gates.
- Consolidate duplicated per-client pipelines toward a single deployment path as the platform moves to multi-tenancy.
- Plan and execute deployments through the environment chain to production, with a rehearsed rollback for every release.
- Support product go-lives and maintain a clear, communicated release calendar.
- Manage secrets and certificates, role-based access control, least privilege and platform patching; work with IT security on audit remediation and the security release plan.
- Own observability, alerting, backups and disaster recovery, including periodic disaster recovery tests.
- Lead responses to platform incidents and conduct blameless root-cause reviews.
- Monitor and optimise Azure spending across environments and clients, right-size resources and report on cost drivers.
- Keep runbooks, environment documentation and configuration records current, documenting work on the same day.
- Participate in Scrum ceremonies, the Innovation Forum and team events, and promptly help engineers with environment and pipeline needs.
