Job description

Join ICOMAT – Revolutionising the Future of Lightweight Manufacturing!

iCOMAT is an advanced manufacturing company that invented Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) - the only proven technology for producing defect-free curved-fiber composite parts at industrial scale. We deliver the lightest structures possible for aerospace, automotive, defense, and space, at a rate and cost efficiency that far exceeds existing composite production processes.

We build and operate automated factories for composite materials, delivering components to Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs. The business has three main divisions: development of automated production machines, development of software design and production tools, and operation of the factory. We work with 25+ customers and completed the largest ever Series A in composites manufacturing to fuel a significant scale-up, with growth plans that will see the business multiply in size over the next two to three years and expand operations into the UK, Europe and the US.

The business has currently more than 130,000 sqm of production capacity with manufacturing facilities in the UK (Gloucester and Swindon) and the US (Dayton, Ohio); a Hardware R&D Centre in Bristol, UK; and a Software R&D Centre in Athens, Greece.

The Role

As Quality Engineer, you own the quality management system (QMS) that lets us ship flight- and road-ready lightweight structures with confidence. You'll write the quality plans and procedures, run audits, manage our approved supplier list, produce FAIR reports and turn production data into improvements. You'll shape quality from the ground up as the factory scales.

What will you be doing?

• Build and run quality control: Develop, implement and maintain procedures that ensure every part meets design specifications and regulatory standards.

• Solve problems at the root: Investigate product and process failures, run root cause analysis and drive corrective actions that stick.

• Make production better: Recommend and lead improvements that reduce defects, raise quality and increase efficiency as we scale.

• Own the paper trail: Compile and maintain inspection, audit, test and corrective action records (including FAIR and ISIR), and report findings clearly to management.

• Audit and keep us compliant: Run internal audits against our quality standards and regulatory requirements.

• Manage supplier quality: Work with suppliers so materials and components meet our standards, and resolve issues quickly when they don't.

• Grow quality culture: Train production staff on quality standards, tools and techniques.

• Collaborate across teams: Work with engineering, production and R&D to feed quality learnings back into product design and manufacturing processes.

• Let the data lead: Analyse defect rates, returns and other quality data to spot trends and prioritise continuous improvement.

What do we need from you?

Essential

• 3+ years in a Quality Engineering or related role

• Working knowledge of QMS frameworks (e.g. ISO 9001, AS9100), tools (e.g. FMEA, SPC) and techniques (e.g. root cause analysis, Six Sigma)

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Proficiency with quality testing equipment, measurement tools and software

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to work with both shop-floor teams and management

• Sharp attention to detail and a commitment to high standards

Desirable

• Quality management systems certification

• Experience with statistical analysis software and data analysis tools

• Familiarity with industry standards in aerospace, automotive or composites

Working Conditions:

• Full-time

• Occasional travel to suppliers or other facilities

Our Values: Uncompromising Excellence

  • Discipline over excuses. We commit. We follow through. We hold ourselves and each other to the highest standard, especially when the pressure is on.
  • Push the edge. iCOMAT was built on a refusal to accept that curved fiber could not be manufactured at scale. We innovate where others hesitate.
  • Aligned and accountable. Everyone owns their lane, communicates openly, and delivers without being chased. No silos. No ambiguity.

Why iCOMAT?

  • Competitive Salary & Benefits: We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including private healthcare, pension scheme.
  • Stock Options: Equity options to give employees a stake in the company’s success
  • Career Growth Opportunities: Join us at a pivotal time as we scale up, offering unmatched professional growth opportunities in the rapidly advancing field of composite materials.
  • Innovation-Focused Culture: We pride ourselves on our inclusive, forward-thinking work environment. Recognized by Bloomberg as a "UK Startup to Watch," iCOMAT celebrates diversity and encourages all applicants, regardless of background, to apply.
  • Global Impact: Be a part of our mission to redefine lightweight structures for the automotive, aerospace, and space industries, working with some of the most influential companies worldwide.Ready to be part of something big?

Through groundbreaking technology, we are revolutionizing advanced composite manufacturing at iCOMAT Ltd. The company is at the forefront of industrial innovation, having pioneered the revolutionary Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) technology, the world's first defect-free fibre-steering process for composites. This patented manufacturing process overcomes the critical limitations of traditional methods, which have long restricted designs to straight fibre layers, resulting in heavier and more expensive structures than necessary. Our RTS technology enables the precise steering of composite tapes along curved paths, a feat previously unattainable without introducing defects. By shearing tapes instead of bending them, we have unlocked new possibilities in structural design and efficiency. This technological breakthrough allows for the creation of ultra-lightweight composite structures that were beyond the limits of conventional straight-fibre designs. Fibre steering enables the strategic placement of tapes to align with load paths, delivering highly optimized components with dramatic weight savings and a significant reduction in raw material usage. This not only enhances performance but also introduces a new level of sustainability into the manufacturing process. iCOMAT offers end-to-end solutions, from initial design and development to the delivery of production components for the aerospace, automotive, and space sectors. We are collaborating with the world's top OEMs and end-users to develop new frontiers in automated composites manufacturing, fundamentally changing how next-generation vehicles are designed and built. Our commitment to research and innovation, born from our origins as a spin-out from the University of Bristol, fuels our mission to make transportation lighter, more sustainable, and more cost-effective than ever before.
