Job description

Evervault is hiring its first Security Engineer in London.

We build modular card payment infrastructure for companies building payment products or their own payments stack. Our tools help developers keep raw card data off their systems, reduce PCI compliance work, and improve payment acceptance, fees and fraud outcomes. Our customers include Rippling, Ramp and Sorare.

We’re a Series B company backed by Index Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Kleiner Perkins.

You’ll join our platform group and own application security from day one, with scope to take responsibility for security across Evervault over time. You’ll be our first dedicated security engineer, working closely with the engineers who build and run our products.

In your first year, expect roughly half your time to go towards hands-on security engineering and half towards audits, questionnaires and customer security reviews. Both are core to the job. You’ll help make our systems more secure and give customers confidence in how we protect their data.

Your work will include:

  • Finding and fixing vulnerabilities in our applications and infrastructure.
  • Building security checks and tooling into how we develop and ship software.
  • Working with engineers on security decisions in product and system design.
  • Owning security and compliance audits, including evidence collection and resolving findings.
  • Handling customer security reviews and questionnaires, and explaining our controls clearly.

You’ll establish how the security function works through the code you ship, the risks you address and the practices you help the team adopt.

We work mostly in Rust and Node.js on AWS, with Terraform and some Go. We care more about your engineering ability than experience with every part of our stack.

We’re looking for an excellent engineer with deep, practical security expertise. You should be comfortable writing production code, investigating unfamiliar systems and taking a fix through to completion. Strong engineering skills and hands-on experience with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) are both essential.

Experience in card payments, particularly running or securing a cardholder data environment, is a strong signal. You’ve taken audits through to resolution and worked at a product company before Series C. Experience as a first or sole security engineer would be valuable.

You use AI daily and actively look for ways it can improve your work. You’re comfortable making progress when the problem is loosely defined, and you take responsibility for the result. We’d also like to hear about something exceptional you’ve done, at work or outside it.

This is an individual contributor role. You’ll have ownership and close collaboration within the platform team, with no immediate people-management remit. We welcome mid-level and senior engineers.

Our values are simple: be sound, curious and optimistic. Do the thing, win as a team, sign your name, wow the user.

We offer:

  • Compensation of around £110,000–£130,000 plus equity, depending on level, with flexibility above that for a particularly senior hire.
  • Stock options with an extended exercise window.
  • Full, top-tier health insurance.
  • Generous vacation and flexible working hours.

You’ll work from our Shoreditch office Tuesday to Thursday. We do not currently sponsor UK work visas.

If you want to define the security function at Evervault and stay close to the engineering, we’d like to hear from you.

Our mission is to encrypt the web. Large-scale data breaches are unfortunately an increasingly regular occurrence, and not a week goes by without a data breach. Just under 80% of companies experienced a cloud data breach in the past 18 months and nearly half reported 10 or more breaches. The important part about data breaches isn’t that they happen; it’s difficult to predict and prevent all attacks & breaches. What’s important is that what gets breached is plaintext, readable data. Evervault exists to solve this — by making it easy for developers to encrypt all data on the web. Why choose Evervault? We’re growing quickly; but hiring deliberately. We hire people; not just roles. We look for aptitude, compounded by attitude. We want people to do their best work at Evervault. Work on big problems: The internet is broken. Data privacy is ignored or solved by cookie preference pop-ups. Imagine a world without data breaches and never having to check haveibeenpwned.com again. Build for the builder: We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us. We think that creating the tools which empower the next generation of builders is one of the most powerful things to be working on. It is a legacy that all of us at Evervault will be proud of in years to come. Goldilocks opportunity: Evervault offers an exciting middle ground between joining a tiny, high-risk startup and going to work for an established company. You get the ownership and opportunity of getting in early; but with a roster of customers who care deeply about our product, and an existing team of dedicated builders. Our proposition: get the experience of building a startup from the ground up, with a solid funding bedrock and a huge scale of opportunity. Life at Evervault We will hire hundreds of people who read this. We cannot possibly succeed in encrypting the web without doing so. We would be thrilled if you had questions about opportunities or just wanted to chat to explore options. Don’t worry too much about picking exactly the right job; we can always give you more options after starting the conversation. Our recruiting philosophy is that we hire people; not roles. Our People The Evervault team come from a range of backgrounds. While some have come from big tech companies like AWS, Stripe, and Zendesk; many others have come from less-obvious backgrounds. Some of our team joined straight out of college, others had started their own companies. Outside work, some of us mountain-bike, climb, swim, busk, write, do standup comedy, teach Bollywood-inspired fitness classes, and edit maths books. Where we work We see the office as a centre of gravity. While you can work-from-home whenever you need; we think creative magic comes from in-person interactions. We believe being in the same physical space is key to building a lasting culture. (This philosophy will likely develop over time to become more remote-friendly.) With that office-centricity; we’ve designed our Dublin office to have a room for every mood. If you’re heads-down on a deadline, head to our library or focus room. Want that coffee shop vibe? Make yourself a flat white on our barista-grade espresso machine and pull up a chair at one of our long tables. It’s a cosy, well-designed space located in the heart of Dublin city: a perfect launchpad to head out after work; or grab some groceries before heading home to the family.
