Laborers perform manual work which may include general cleaning of streets, yards, and parking lots; litter control; landscaping; directing traffic; or driving vehicles. Work is generally performed under the immediate direction of a supervisor, but many types of work assigned may be very routine and repetitive in nature and after once learned can be carried on without difficulty and only under general supervision.

Currently there are vacancies in the Public Works Department, Disposal & Diversion Division. The position is located at the North Gateway Transfer Station, 30205 N. Black Canyon Highway Phoenix, Arizona 85085.

U1* $15.40 (minimum) - $18.61 (maximum) hourly / $32,032 - $38,709 annually.

U2* $15.42 (minimum) - $17.69 (maximum) hourly / $32,074 - $36,795 annually.

Candidates may be hired above the minimum depending upon qualifications.

Pension Information


  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction in the English language.

  • Ability to learn and perform manual labor and operate handheld tools.

  • Ability to work irregular shifts as shifts will include Saturdays and holidays.

  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, dust, strong odors, and exhaust fumes.

  • Ability to move heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more may be required.

  • Ability to bend, stand, or stoop repeatedly or continually over time, lift arms above shoulder level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Prior experience in a solid waste environment.

  • Prior experience working outside.
