    What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

    Salary: $107,630 (Step 01) to $139,916 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

    Responsibilities

    As an Oceanographer within the Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

    • Serves as a technical expert and authoritative source of consultation in the development and application of artificial intelligence techniques, including deep learning, to scientific studies of coastal zone with a focus on patterns and courses of geomorphologic change.
    • Develops novel techniques for the analysis of remotely sensed imagery and associated products of coastal zones before and after the effects of large storms to characterize the patterns and causes of coastal change.
    • Lead the development, assessment and implementation of autonomous analysis techniques of geologic substrates, including seafloor and river bottom type and sediment grain size, using both acoustic and optical data sources.
    • Disseminate results through the authoring and data releases and peer-reviewed publications.

    Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

    Laboratory duties may demand prolong periods of standing and manual dexterity to operate equipment. Field work may require moderate to strenuous activities such as hiking, swimming, carrying up to 40 pounds, driving vehicles with trailers, and/or operating small vessels. Fieldwork is performed in and on the ocean, estuaries, and coastal lands and is a subject to temperature extremes and hazardous conditions such as breaking waves and strong water currents.

    In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience could include planning, executing and reporting on original oceanographic or coastal morphology studies or ongoing oceanographic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques in oceanography and artificial intelligence including deep neural networks, to address novel or obscure scientific studies of coastal zones for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, oceanographers have extensive knowledge of the principles of oceanography and artificial intelligence and a highly developed ability in their application. They also have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
