Job Summary:

The Academic Advisor provides academic advising for undergraduate students. The incumbent interacts with other student service professionals on a regular basis and collaborates with advisors in the center and across colleges to provide holistic and comprehensive advising to undergraduate students. The incumbent will provide independent curricular advising of undergraduate and international students, including class schedule preparation, education and career goals, PAWS review/interpretation, and establishing MyCAPS; provide suggestions and alternate solutions to problems as they arise. The incumbent will provide advising services in individual or group settings, in person, virtually, via email or telephone; domestic and international. This position participates and presents at CSUSB events such as orientation, Choose CSUSB, preview day, commencement, student convocation, and more along with college-level advising activities. Such advisement involves basic counseling techniques and may concern career, academic, learning, campus life, and/or related issues. Incumbents of this classification spend substantial time advising, which utilizes skills usually gained in graduate courses in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields.

Duties and responsibilities

Academic Advising
  • Maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, and the general public.
  • Provide academic advising to undergraduate students individually or in groups. Advise students about academic success services, student organizations, scholarships, study abroad, career opportunities, and other enriching experiences on and off-campus
  • Works directly with students to discuss major program requirements, create academic plans (myCAP), review and educate students on how to read and understand their PAWS, and provide direct services to students.
  • Participate in targeted academic advising campaigns and outreach and utilize NAVIGATE to create advising summary reports.
  • Introduce and refer students to campus resources, when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with college faculty and department chairs to stay informed of program and major requirements pertaining to academic advising.
  • Identify and encourages student engagement in activities/programs that compliment students’ academic preparation for career.

Campus Partnerships and Events
  • Participate in campus events such as orientation, convocation, weeks of welcome, choose CSUSB, and others as they arise.
  • Coordinates, leads, and delivers workshop presentations to students that covers moderately complex subject matter.
  • Conducts individual and group advising in partnership with centers and departments on campus.

Perform other classification-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience: Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
  • Ability to recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public
  • agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • (2) years working in a Student learning center, academic success center, or an academic advising center.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited university in Higher Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Familiar with student services and academic programs.
  • Experience in the use of the PeopleSoft Student Administration System.
  • Experience in the use of Navigate.
  • Knowledge of transfer policies & procedures, and admission requirements.
  • Remains current regarding trends and developments in higher education, student development theory, and high-impact practices related to advising, transition, and student success.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and in large groups.
  • Experience fostering and maintaining effective relationships and the ability to work collaboratively across organizational lines and coordinate the efforts of multiple areas is essential.
  • Demonstrated multicultural/cross-cultural competency and commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.


Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,083 per month

Classification Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228 per month

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Full-time Exempt Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
