Summary:
To create a flexible ASD program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary grade education in accordance with each student's ability; to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ability to use and analyze data to improve student learning.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Coordinates with other elementary professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in staff meetings and committees.
- Instruct students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in academic subjects and social interaction skills.
- Develop instructional objectives for each student.
- Evaluate the progress of students.
- Assess individual students to determine the level of functioning and appropriate curricular areas.
- Direct the paraprofessional(s) under his/her immediate supervision in the manner prescribed and as requested by the immediate supervisor.
- Participate in IEP meetings when appropriate.
- Contribute, in a positive manner, to the overall quality and operation of the program.
- Assume responsibility to transport oneself to assigned work sites and maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Ensure student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Supervises students in activities that take place outside the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.
- Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
Qualifications:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with ASD Endorsement
- Meets highly qualified standards.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- Educational experience and/or training in teaching the Michigan State Standards
- Ability to use technology in the educational setting.
- Knowledge and experience related to English Learners.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust/focus.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors, although there may be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
Mental Functions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing in the English language, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
