Job Overview
The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) – Land & Maritime, located in Columbus, OH, is seeking a dedicated, qualified Staff Sign Language Interpreter to provide consistent on-site American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) employees. This is not a pool or on-call position—you will be the primary interpreter on shift Monday through Thursday to ensure reliable coverage for a wide range of federal workplace interactions.
In addition to on-site assignments in Columbus, occasional video remote interpreting (VRI) may be required for other DLA detachments across the U.S.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clear and accurate ASL interpretation for:
- Formal training sessions in acquisition, HR, IT, logistics, and quality assurance
- On-the-job training and daily work-related communication
- Interviews, team meetings, safety briefings, policy discussions, disciplinary meetings
- Interpret via video remote platforms for other DLA sites, as needed
- Maintain professional conduct and confidentiality in all federal assignments

- Communicate promptly with DLA’s EEO COR regarding schedule, delays, or assignment changes
- Support recorded or live streamed events regardless of live attendance by D/HH individuals
Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following certification and experience combinations:
- National certification (e.g., RID, NIC, CI/CT, BEI Advanced/Master):

- Minimum of 1 year
- of professional interpreting experience
- State-level interpreter certification (recognized by any U.S. state):
– Minimum of 3 years of professional interpreting experience
- No formal certification:
– Minimum of 10 years of documented, professional ASL interpreting experience in workplace, government, or technical environments
Additional Requirements:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Competency in Pidgin Signed English (PSE), Signed English, Tactile, Close Vision, and/or Oral interpretation is strongly preferred
- Experience interpreting technical content in areas such as procurement, human resources, IT, logistics, or government policy is highly desirable
- Must be able to pass a federal background check and adhere to base security protocols
- Demonstrated professionalism, punctuality, and strict confidentiality across all assignments
