Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY: Saginaw Valley State University, a DII member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic conference invites applications for the position of Assistant Coach for men’s soccer to assist the head coach to develop, promote and supervise all facets of the men’s soccer program; assist the head coach to develop and execute strategies for the recruitment of student-athletes for highly visible regionally and nationally competitive team; assist the head coach to organize and direct all aspects of the men’s soccer program, organizing practice sessions to enhance the team’s performance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to all applicable NCAA and conference compliance rules and regulations.
  • Ensuring that all relevant institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations are followed, including, but not limited to, player eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, scheduling, and academic progress.
  • Ensure compliance with all institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations by student-athletes and sport-related staff.
  • Abides by NCAA Bylaws 10.1 and 11.1 regarding ethical conduct and the responsibility to positively contribute to a campus culture of NCAA rules compliance.
  • Responsible for promoting a positive academic environment to encourage all athletes to strive for academic excellence.
  • Assist in preparing and executing practice and game plans, strategies and alternatives which are designed to bring success to the program.
  • Providing moral support and encouragement. Ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.
  • Establishing and maintaining community contacts, which enhances the success of the program.
  • Assisting in the purchase, maintenance, and inventory of uniforms and equipment.
  • Assist in directing and managing the recruiting efforts of the program.
  • Assist in designing and implementing off-season training programs for student-athletes.
  • Assist in all fundraising needs for the program.
  • Maintain appropriate communications with student-athletes and parents.
  • Assist in planning banquets, fundraising efforts, and other activities promoting the program.
  • Assist in managing travel arrangements for the team.
  • Assist with promoting, operating, and coordinating summer camps.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General supervision is received from the Head Men’s Soccer Coach

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma
  • Two years of relevant sport coaching or participation experience at the collegiate level or higher.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to handle and maintain confidential information.
  • Willingness to travel nights and weekends.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Experience and ability to positively interact with a diverse campus community.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four years of relevant sport coaching or participation experience at the collegiate level or higher
  • Exceptional leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a diverse community.
  • Strong desire and ability to successfully recruit.
  • Strong follow-through skills, as well as the ability to plan, organize, and control projects through to completion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, with possible exposure to challenging weather or environmental elements. Some evening and weekend work, as well as occasional travel, will be necessary.
