We are looking for an Assistant Photo Editor, Product Recommendations.

Reports to: Head of Visuals and Editor of the Filter
Normal location: New York preferred
Terms: 12 month contract, four days per week, News Media Guild position, September 1st start
The Guardian US is looking for an assistant photo editor in our New York newsroom. The photo editor will primarily be responsible for supporting the launch and operation of the Filter US: the Guardian’s product recommendation site. This new digital consumer vertical aims to inform and inspire readers to make smart, sustainable buying decisions, and complements the existing UK-focused Filter.
The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about shopping, product reviews and service journalism and have strong ideas for developing a unique visual identity for the Filter US that is consistent with Guardian values.
About the role
- Sourcing images for articles from PR companies and their relevant sites
- Sourcing lead images for articles from stock libraries
- Creating composites for articles in which the focus is testing products (example here)
- Commissioning photographers or briefing writers to take images to go with specific articles
- Develop varied approaches for illustrating the different areas of coverage
- Build composite images
- Retouching and post processing amateur photographs
- The picture editor would need to be able to work independently and proactively and also be confident with using Photoshop (cutting out objects, using layers etc.).
- Lay out photo-driven stories in our CMS
About you
- 1-3 years experience as a photo editor in a newsroom
- Knowledge of the product recommendation landscape in the US and overseas
- Good knowledge of picture agencies and archives
- Proven deep research skills, and experience with news gathering tools and wire services
- Able to work quickly and accurately on multiple projects at speed and under pressure
- Enthusiasm for good journalism, photography and visual storytelling
- Interest in promoting a diverse group of photographers and subjects
- Experience with Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator
- An eye for detail and nuance
In addition to the core responsibilities, we’d be interested in a demonstrated experience in any one of the following areas, which could make up a small part of the role:
- News photo editing
- Photo collage
- Editorial graphic design
