We are currently seeking a highly motivated Assistant Structures Representative located in Los Angeles, CA.
Overview:
The Assistant Structures Representative (ASR) / Field Engineer supports structural construction oversight on transportation and public infrastructure projects. This role involves assisting the Structures Representative with contract administration, construction engineering, inspection, documentation, and coordination for bridge, retaining wall, falsework, and other structural components, ensuring compliance with Caltrans standards and project specifications.
Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
Required Qualifications:
In order to become a candidate, you must possess the following skills and abilities:
- 5+ years of experience on public works or transportation projects, with at least some exposure to structural work.
- Working knowledge of Caltrans Bridge Construction procedures, Standard Specifications, and relevant manuals (e.g., Falsework Manual).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Bluebeam; familiarity with structure-specific forms and templates a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate field records.
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to work on active construction sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with cast-in-place post-tensioned box girder bridge construction, falsework, temporary shorings, mass soil mixing, and retaining walls.
- EIT certification or on track for PE license.
- Caltrans Structure Rep training or familiarity with METS processes.
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification.
- Experience with alternate delivery methods such as progressive design build, design-build and/or CMGC.
- Familiarity with LAWA Design and Construction Handbook, and project delivery procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and support LAWA Construction Inspection Division and City of LA with daily field inspections to verify contractor operations related to structural components, including cast-in-place concrete, structural steel, falsework/temporary works, precast elements, post-tensioning, and CIDH Pile Construction.
- Prepare and maintain checklists for structures inspections, field material sampling and testing, source inspections in accordance with project plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Assist in verifying that materials, methods, and workmanship conform to contract documents, Caltrans Standard Specifications, and the Caltrans Bridge Construction Records and Procedures (BCRP) manual.
- Maintain detailed field records including daily reports, quantity calculations, inspection logs, and photographic documentation, develop punch-lists and as-built documentation.
- Assist with the review and processing of submittals, RFIs, Field Directives, request for task orders, change notices and change orders.
- Monitor contractor progress and participate in schedule reviews and look-ahead coordination.
- Monitor temporary structures operations for conformance with approved falsework plans, erection plans, and working drawings.
- Develop 4-scale drawings, grade / elevation sheets for various elements of CIP Post-Tension Box Girder Bridge and verify the grades for various elements of the structures in the field using basic surveying principals and tools.
- Coordinate materials sampling and testing with LAWA Labs, LA BCA, Caltrans METS or other QA entities.
- Communicate with the LAWA, Structures Representative, contractor personnel, and agency stakeholders to resolve field issues.
- Assist with punchlists, closeout documentation, and final reports for structural work.
- Able to be flexible and work days, nights, and/or weekends in heavy construction at elevated heights, if needed.
Salary:
- $142,000-155,000 annually

A bonus may be granted to employees depending on individual performance, employee utilization, attendance, tenure, and furtherance of other non-financial corporate goals; bonus opportunities are available at management’s discretion.
