Summary:
The Audio Tech Intern for Gateway Studios plays an important role in the day-to-day operations of the audio department. The audio Intern will learn and perform various kinds of skills, such as soldering, testing and repairing cables, “tinkering,” rigging, etc.. Working right alongside some of the leading audio professionals in the field, the Audio Intern will gain knowledge and experience, create relationships, and develop skills that they will be able to use throughout their career.
INTERNSHIP OUTCOME
Learning Objective
1. Test and Repair Cables
- Test and perform diagnostics on cables to ensure that they are working properly
- Learn how to repair and troubleshoot dysfunctional cables
- Organize and store cables in a way that meets company standards and guidelines
- Clean and prep cables for upcoming events
2. Soldering
- Learn the basics of soldering
- Assist audio technicians in the preparation and building of cables
3. Prepping Equipment
- Learn the proper methods for prepping equipment for upcoming events
- Assist in the preparation of audio documents and equipment
- Help create a plan of action and technical designs for upcoming shows
- Learn how to read and understand documents created for onsite logistics
- Learn how to conduct proper asset management prep procedures
4. De-prepping Equipment
- Learn how to de-prep equipment after it has returned from a previous event
- Re-enter equipment into the asset management system
- Track assets and equipment, ensuring that all equipment is properly recorded in the data system
- Clean, repair, and test all necessary components of a show, including returning all assets to a “show ready” state
5. Component QC
- Learn quality control measures for all assets in house
- Test and update firmware
- Check, track, and maintain proper working order of all assets in house
6. Tinkering
- Learn how to think outside the box and push the envelope of what is possible with equipment
- Develop a muscle memory and deep level of familiarity with equipment
- Gain confidence in thinking outside of the box and trying new things with audio equipment
- Work with mixing consoles and tune audio systems
- Learn system alignment practice and monitor mixing, as well IEM mixing and RF coordinating
- Create tasks and challenges that you would like to tackle and learn in your field of interest
7. Rigging and Motor Basics
- Develop skills in rigging and motor basics
- Learn how to properly rig and de-rig systems safely
- Learn proper protocols for load management and rigging safety
- Learn and understand proper safety measures with motors and rigging
8. Power Basics (Feeder)
- Learn power safety of all types of power cables and connections
- Develop skills in safely connecting and disconnecting power cables
- Learn the basics of how to properly use power cables, including feeder, main disconnects, tails, “tying in,” L21-30A, Edison, True 1, rack loading, and backup power
9. Attendance
- Attendance is an essential requirement for this position
10. Any and all other duties

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certificates
- University Student pursuing a degree in a related field
- Young professional pursuing a career in live sound or related field
Experience
- Attended or attending classes that pertain to the internship position
- Experience working in audio in a live-events setting
- Experience working in live events
Skills/Abilities
- Basic knowledge of equipment and industry terminology
- Willingness to learn and ability to follow direction
- Aptitude for grasping technical skills
- Great attitude and open-mindedness
