Summary Description:
Under limited direction, facilitates and enhances patient care and hospital efficiency by assuring and expediting appropriate assignment of patients, counseling attending physicians and hospital department heads regarding third party payer requirements, coordinating patient care communication and fostering cooperation between numerous hospital departments for appropriate and safe patient care. Performs various professional functions related to appropriate placement of patients to hospital services, including hospital-wide decisions regarding direct admits, transfers, pre-admission review, as well as emergency and other intra-departmental admissions. Utilizes expertise in third party reimbursement procedures and regulations to enhance hospital revenues and prevent financial losses such as non-reimbursed services. Assigns patients to appropriate clinical/nursing services according to knowledge of hospital bed capacity and utilization, availability of required clinical services, as well as knowledge of clinical needs of patient. Maintains contact with numerous hospital departments such as patient management (admitting), nursing units, emergency department and other points of entry into the hospital in order to effectively utilize hospital capacity. Expedites patient admissions/transfers, as well as coordinates problem resolution involving consideration of acuity of patient, diagnosis, preparation of vacant beds, competent staffing, physician orders upon admission, and records. Routinely interacts with attending physicians and department heads to resolve and coordinate patient placement issues. Coordinates pre-admission authorization from third parties/insurance providers when required, maintaining necessary documentation.
Qualifications
:Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
2. Michigan RN license.
3. Three to five years experience as a nurse in a patient care setting.
4. Preferably experience with emergency department and/or critical care.
5. Knowledge of third party payors.
Skills Required:
1. Analytical skills and abilities to assess hospital capability, service options, resolve problems that typically involves many departments working together, determine patient needs, understand third party regulations and processes, identify options to meet patient needs.
2. Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate and negotiate with all types of hospital personnel (including department heads), third party payers(such as BC/BS, Medicare), medical staff (including department chiefs), patients, families and outside agencies/organizations.
3. Ability to resolve conflict, including situations where there may be conflicting priorities.
4. Skills necessary to work independently and coordinate/prioritize multiple tasks.
5. Clinical assessment skills and knowledge to evaluate patient care needs, to influence and counsel physicians regarding appropriate admissions of patients, to negotiate with third party payors regarding clinical services provided, and to correctly assess capability of hospital departments to provide appropriate and safe care.
