SUMMARY/OVERVIEW
This position is responsible for the start-up, operation, adjustment, shutdown, maintenance, and repair of Boilers in VA hospitals and other Government facilities. Boiler Operators are responsible for their personal growth and advancement by being willing to safely learn and are open to mentoring through on-the job training for the various task that may be assigned while on the job.
To be considered a Boiler Operator, Venergy requires the individual to have a desire to work in the boiler and burner field and have the basic comprehensive skills to perform task under direct supervision of Technicians. This position also requires the operator to have a fully functional understanding of how to operate boilers since this role is considered for experienced individuals and not one for beginners or those needing an in-depth or extensive training.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operational Duties: Responsible for the start-up, operation, adjustment, shutdown, maintenance, and repair of Boilers.
- Load Management: Adjust load demands while maintaining safe levels and efficient combustion.
- Emergency Management: Maintain steam supply in critical areas during power, water, or steam failures.
- Auxiliary Equipment Operation: Operate all boiler auxiliary equipment such as automatic boiler controls, feed water heaters, pumps, forced and induced draft fans, and water softeners.
- Combustion Efficiency: Adjust firing controls, fuel feeds, and air drafts to optimize air-fuel mixtures for maximum combustion efficiency and energy conservation.
- Problem Recognition: Recognize, interpret, and respond to various issues indicated by chart recorders, gauges, and meters, making necessary adjustments to prevent boiler loss.
- Chemical Management: Determine and add the correct type and amount of chemicals to the boilers and condensate return system to control corrosion and scale formation.
- Physical Demands: Frequently work in confined areas around boiler and support equipment, lifting and carrying parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally over 40 pounds with assistance.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- A valid/current Stationary Engineering License.
- Ability to read and follow blueprints and maintenance and operation manuals.
- Aptitude in math and strong problem-solving abilities.
- Prior military experience preferred.
- Working at the Houston, Texas location will be required.
- Clear criminal record, no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions for assaultive behavior or crimes of moral turpitude.
- Operating high-pressure steam boilers, with thorough familiarity with hospital systems

Work is medium to heavy demand. Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires good visual acuity and hearing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Regularly works around moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat, and humidity. Noise level may be loud at times.
