JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Tarrant is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Building Inspections Superintendent. This leadership role is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing the inspection and enforcement of building and zoning regulations to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances, and laws. Key responsibilities include reviewing construction plans, specifications, and drawings, as well as coordinating and/or conducting technical reviews in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders such as the Fire Department, Codes & Standards Division, and Electrical and Building Plan Coordinators. The Superintendent also provides supervision and guidance to inspection staff, setting performance expectations, offering direction, and delivering training to support professional development and operational effectiveness.

Tarrant: $57,491 - $89,190
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
  • Driver's license.
  • Possession of one of the following certifications from the International Code Council:
  • Building Official Certification.
  • Building Inspector Certification.
  • Electrical Inspector Certification.
  • Plumbing Inspector Certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Tarrant. These qualifications may be considered by Tarrant when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
  • Building Official Certification from the International Code Council.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Building Science or related field.
  • Supervisory experience in construction field or local government.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data to ensure expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.
  • Conducts building inspections by scheduling inspections, reviewing permit cards, investigating code violations, and contacting property owners to conducting typical inspection activities to ensure inspections are performed in a timely manner.
  • Researches and reviews codes, ordinances, notices, and permitting by reading code books and amendments, and researching new materials to ensure knowledge is current or to provide accurate information to others.
  • Provides service to internal and/or external customers so responses can be made to inquiries and/or issues can be resolved.
  • Interprets codes and ordinances by comparing plans to applicable codes and ordinances, and explaining zoning requirements to clarify information for construction professionals and the general public.
  • Reviews plans by comparing plan components to applicable codes and ordinances, checking flood plan maps, conferring with the fire department to ensure compliance and life safety.
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
  • Maintains inspection records by filing, researching, documenting records, calculating fees and preparing for court cases so proper documentation is available.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Work may involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as during regular field visits to external places of business, residence, or construction worksites.
