Job Summary
Fulfill all duties and responsibilities as the Certification Officer/TExES (Texas Examination of Educator Standards) Coordinator for the Teacher Education Program under the close supervision of the Dean of the School of Education and Fine Arts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The employee in this position may be asked to perform duties not listed in the job description, but which are also considered essential to the position.
Functions and Duties of Certification Officer/TExES Coordinator
- Organize all aspects of student applications for the Teacher Education Program; for example, determining eligibility, including GPA's, Texas Success Initiative Assessment-2 (TSIA-2) results, 30/45/60-hours requirement, endorsements requirement, etc.
- Distribute all pertinent information at Teacher Education Council meeting in which applicants are accepted or denied
- Follow-up on all Teacher Education Program applicants (mailing out acceptance/denial letters, rechecking GPA's, applicants who did not sign up for EDU courses, etc.)
- Determine that all students enrolled in our EDU entry-level classes applied for the program and are eligible
- Assist the Director of Field Experiences in placing all students for required observation hours in local public schools
- Maintain student files in the Teacher Education Program
- Organize all aspects of applications to clinical teaching/internships (determining eligibility, including GPA's, capstone course completion, endorsements requirement, etc.)
- Determine eligibility for authorizing students to take certification (TExES) tests
- Distribute pertinent TExES results with Testing Coordinator, content-area deans and department heads
- Compile and submit all State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), Accountability System for Educator Preparation (ASEP), and Federal Title II data and reports
- Attend regional and state professional meetings on a regular basis including the Texas Association of Certification Officers (TACO), and Texas Coordinators for Teacher Certification Testing (TCTCT) meetings
- Draw up all deficiency plans for post-baccalaureate applicants
- Determine eligibility and recommend all students for standard or probationary certification
- Follow-up contact with students who are eligible for certification but who have not applied at SBEC On-Line
- Print and deliver name badges to schools where we have student observers and clinical teachers
- Keep the Dean of the School of Education up to date on all SBEC/ASEP standings
- Attend all training meetings in association with teacher certification and testing, and
- On-campus liaison for any faculty who are not familiar with education or certification issues
- Become a certified Pearson VVE test administrator

Qualifications

- Education and/or Experience – Bachelor's degree from an accredited University or one or two years of directly related experience in K-12 or higher education setting
- Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations in English; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals effectively; ability to present information and respond to questions effectively from groups of students, other employees, trustees and the public
- Math Skills - Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages and area. Ability to apply concepts of basic Algebra
- Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form in English
- Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent working knowledge of Commonly used Internet browsers; Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook email software, and must become familiar with TEA and Pearson technology
- Licenses - Must be at least 21 years old and maintain a current Texas driver's license to drive any vehicle, including personally owned vehicles, on behalf of the University
- Other skills and abilities - Must be able to travel away from home 1% of the time and must be able to work in the evenings and on the weekends approximately 1% of the time
