Job Summary
Under general direction of the County Assessor, provides clerical support for the Assessor's office.
Job Responsibilities
- Assists with all clerical functions and day to day office operations.
- Performs a variety of clerical tasks, including but not limited to: answers the phone, greets and assists the public, schedules meetings, processes departmental mail, property sales data entry, building permit data entry, other departmental data entry as assigned, and general departmental document filing and organization.
- Assists with Assessor?s Office processes and procedures, including but not limited to; property ownership and address changes, deeds, DOV's, permits, applications, tier units, and other various forms and reports.
- Processes property credits and exemptions, including but not limited to; homestead, military, ag land, disabled vet, family farm and any other property credits and exemptions found in Iowa Code.
- Communicates regularly with staff at all levels and property owners to address questions and concerns.
- Assists with scheduling and preparation of files and documents for Board of Review, Property Assessment Appeal Board [PAAB], and District Court as needed.
- Assists with appraisal and re-appraisal projects as needed
- Performs other office and departmental clerical duties as needed and/or assigned.
Standards for Initial Consideration
Work Experience:
No prior experience required but minimum of one (1) year of office clerical or administrative related experience preferred.
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Essential Skills:
- Must possess a valid driver?s license and reliable vehicle
- Excellent typing and data entry skills, minimum 40 WPM and 6,000 KPH
- Working knowledge of modern office procedures and techniques
- Excellent public-relation skills, customer service skills, phone skills, public-speaking etiquette and must be able to handle mild confrontation calmly and professionally.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to multi-task, ability to communicate and work with others, ability to work and meet deadlines in stressful situations and under pressure
- Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office products; specifically Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Knowledge of reporting and record-keeping practices.
- Basic knowledge of database(s), and reporting and record-keeping software systems.
- Ability to gather, analyze, evaluate, and report data.
- Ability to self-motivate, manage own workload, complete assignments, projects, and administrative tasks accurately, efficiently and in a timely manner, and routinely meet strenuous deadlines.
- Ability to take and follow direction, collaborate with staff, and give effective input when requested.
- Ability to utilize basic mathematical calculations.

Physical Ability Requirement
- Must be able to routinely lift objects weighing 30 pounds. Ability to perform detailed data entry utilizing personal computer for extended periods.
- Must possess sufficient vision which permits moderate production and review a wide variety of materials both in hardcopy and electronic form
- Must possess clarity of speech and hearing which permits effective communication
- Must possess sufficient manual dexterity which permits regular daily use of a keyboard and mouse
