A Brief Overview
The Credit Analyst is responsible for underwriting a pipeline mainly comprised of complex Commercial Lending requests. This position will analyze and interpret potential borrowers financial background, identify potential risk to provide a financial analysis to Market Officer with credit recommendation. The Analyst will provide ongoing financial monitoring to ensure covenant compliance and proper collateral margin. The Credit Analyst will assist with interpretation of Loan Policy and Cash Flow Analysis, as well as assist in department training on new guidelines, policies, systems, and other related matters. The Analyst requires the ability to think critically and solve complex problems, excellent time-management and organizational skills, as well as strong attention to detail.
What you will do
- Underwrite a pipeline of complex Commercial Lending requests
- Analyze and interpret potential commercial borrowers financial background, identify potential risk, and determine credit worthiness
- Provide financial analysis to Market Officer with credit recommendation
- Lead junior staff with testing borrower financials and independently test complex borrower financials required by Loan Policy to determine ongoing financial health, covenant compliance, and collateral margins
- Conduct initial underwriting to determine what documentation is needed to satisfy requirements
- Collaborate with officers and other team members to follow up on any outstanding conditions that are needed
- Understand and adhere to Commercial Lending, regulatory guidelines, and comply with internal Loan Policy
- Review files for compliance and completeness while performing final underwriting and submission
- Answer complex Commercial Lending related questions from internal and external stakeholders
- Mentor and train junior team members and Market Officers
- Assist with interpretation of Loan Policy and Cash Flow Analysis
- Assist in department training on new guidelines, policies, systems, and other related matters
- Collaborate on department projects, initiatives, present at meetings and/or centralized training classes
- Assist with department quality control processes
- Provide support to the lending officer to ensure regulatory and internal policy compliance
- Interface with complex borrowing relationships and provide detailed risk analysis and feedback to officer
- Review and work with lending officer to create Loan Committee packets prior to pre-circulation and recommend revisions or improvements
- Address Loan Policy inconsistencies with department leadership
- Assist with the creation of term sheets, letters of interest, and drafting of commitment letters for commercial loans at the request of the lending officer
- Underwrite Vendor relationships
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned
- Understand and comply with all provisions of the Safety in the Workplace policy
Minimum Requirements
- Typically requires a bachelor's degree in related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
- A combination of post-high school education, job related certification and related experience equivalent to 5 years may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.
Preferred Requirements
- Prior commercial underwriting experience

- Excellent knowledge of financial analysis factors, including cash flow analysis, balance sheet analysis, profitability, liquidity, and solvency analysis
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to recognize credit weaknesses and recommend changes to address them
- Ability to learn, use, and train others on internal loan systems
- Strong in Microsoft Office products, especially Excel
- Ability to train and mentor less experienced credit department staff
- Ability to recognize inefficiencies and suggest improved processes
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Frequently remains stationary throughout a typical business day
- Frequently operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer
- Occasionally moves about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, and other rooms
- Occasionally positions self to access drawers and shelves of various heights
- Frequently reaches for and handles paperwork and files
- Constantly communicates with customers, coworkers, and management in-person and on the phone
- Must be able to exchange accurate information
- FirstBank does not currently offer fully remote positions, except as required by law. The actual number of in-office days that may be required will vary by business unit, role, and business need.
Salary Range
$76,752.00 to $102,492.00
