About the role
The Guardian is seeking a creative and rigorous Commissioning Editor to support the launch of a new product recommendation vertical at Guardian US that aims to inform and inspire readers to make smart, sustainable buying decisions. This role will be central to developing the editorial strategy and managing editorial output, including commissioning, editing and writing high-quality consumer-facing journalism and reviews.
Key responsibilities
- Originate ambitious, engaging editorial ideas and guide colleagues and contributors in producing them to a high standard.
- Commission projects from both staff and freelance writers.
- Edit a variety of articles and content, ensuring quality, clarity, and consistency.
- Manage editorial workflows, content calendars and deadlines.
- Contribute to writing reviews and consumer articles as needed.
- Coach contributors and help develop their writing and editorial skills, and help develop testing protocols for reviews.
- Collaborate with the editor, copy editors and design colleagues to ensure journalistic output is visually and editorially compelling.
- Implement and oversee editorial processes to ensure recommendations and reviews are up-to-date, relevant, and consistently meet standards.
About you
- Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in an editing role at a news or publishing brand, with product review experience preferred.
- Proven experience in commissioning and coaching both freelancers and staff writers through the editorial process.
- Strong ability to collaborate with production teams (e.g. sub-editors, photo editors) to maintain editorial quality.
- Experience in verticals including home, fashion, beauty, travel and gadgets are a plus.
- Ability to identify trends and interpret data from social media, search and internal analytics.
- Effective leadership and project management experience.
- Alignment with Guardian editorial values, including independence, rigorous testing, and a commitment to ethical consumption.
- Experience distilling complicated topics into fun, engaging copy that retains a strong voice and technical accuracy.
- A demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role is highly desirable.
