Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
This 12-month administrative faculty position reports to the Vice President for Academic and Workforce Solutions. The Dean supports the college mission, vision, and values and ensures that strategic planning, assessment, and improvement activities are implemented for the academic school. Engages in leadership, management, and assessment activities with school faculty to facilitate utilization of best practices in pedagogy and applications of educational technology; promotes student persistence and success; promotes individual professional growth and development; foster collegiality; engages in curriculum improvement and development; and fulfill the school and college mission. Evaluates the performance of school faculty and staff per approved processes. Assists students in achieving goals through advising, counseling, and retention activities, referral to student services, certification for graduation, resolution of problems and conflicts, and upholding college policy. Leads and coordinates school activities related to curriculum development and implementation following VWCC, VCCS, and SCHEV policies and procedures. Facilitates the creation of programmatic and individual course offerings and scheduling. Leads and directs the accreditation process for any school specific accreditations, ensuring compliance with discipline specific accreditation requirements. Collaborates with workforce coordinators to set up and support workforce training and lifelong learning initiatives. Evaluates workforce programs and services offered to the requisite constituencies to determine effectiveness, satisfaction, and the need for revision. Monitors local and regional market data to ascertain the currency and responsiveness of college offerings related to workforce programs, and to implement continuous improvement and quality assurance measures to ensure the full satisfaction of the customers and the College. Determines the best methods to develop and deliver credit and non-credit courses for workforce training and continuing education related to the academic area. In conjunction with school faculty, assesses needs for faculty, staff, resources, equipment, and technology in relation to College goals and learning outcomes. Participates in the college budgeting process, manages the school’s budget, and seeks external funding through grants, public-private partnerships, or other sources as indicated by the need to support school. Serves the college community through participation on college committees, upholding college policy, and representing the college within the VCCS and the broader community to include service on local committees and boards.
Master's Degree in a field within health sciences. Experience in management in an academic school involving supervision, program management, budgeting, curriculum development, and conflict resolution involving student and employee matters. Knowledge of and experience with health specific accreditation processes and clinical environments. Demonstrated strong organizational skills and project management skills.
Additional Considerations:
Experience in a management role in a community college setting. Prior teaching experience in an area of health sciences in a post-secondary or community college setting. Experience with new program development and program evaluation. Experience in securing and managing grant funding, including proposal development, compliance monitoring, and reporting. Knowledge and experience of procurement and negotiating bids for goods and services. Ability to articulate the role of industry recognized credentials and workforce training in a healthcare focused academic school.
