Sugar Bowl Academy (SBA) is a fully accredited private independent school and gold-certified U.S. Ski and Snowboard club. The school is uniquely situated at 6,900 feet on Donner Summit at Sugar Bowl Resort, with both day and boarding school programs for grades 6 through 12 as well as athletic programs for ages 5 through 20. Student-athletes are offered world-class athletics and college preparatory academics in one place. We celebrate grit, grace, and courage, and are seeking a new team member who does the same.
Overview of the Position
The Director of Students is a member of the SBA leadership team and reports directly to the Executive Director. Working closely with the Director of Residential Life, the Director of Instruction, and the Director of Athletics, the Director of Students is the lead for supporting and guiding all students to ensure a positive school environment, with a focus on students living in the dormitory. The ideal candidate is a caring, responsible, and mature person that is committed to the well-being and success of students academically, athletically, and personally.
Essential Functions
- Provide ongoing support and resources to students to enhance their emotional well-being, including a sense of meaning, purpose, and supportive relationships.
- Communicate regularly with students and their families to address concerns, provide updates, and support their overall development.
- Collaborate with other staff members to create a supportive and welcoming community.
- Supervise students living in the dorm, providing support and guidance to foster a positive living environment.
- Facilitate transportation needs for students, coordinating schedules and ensuring timely arrivals and departures.
- Organize and supervise extracurricular activities and events to enhance student life.
- Stay updated on best practices in student life management and implement them effectively.
Position Requirements
- Degree in school counseling, social work, or a related field is preferred.
- At least 5 years of experience working with students is preferred.
- U.S. Ski & Snowboard membership and completion of SafeSport training.
- Valid California Driver’s License and a reliable personal vehicle.
Physical requirements
- Able to work in a high altitude, mountain environment with heavy storms disrupting day-to-day operations.
- Able to drive personal vehicle in mountain environment, including in winter conditions.
- Able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Able to look at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
- Able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
- Able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
