GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Perform routine (journey-level) health, fitness and wellness training for the Training Operations division. Work involves planning, researching, developing, organizing, instructing, and evaluating all aspects of the health, wellness, and strength and conditioning training programs. Work under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Evaluate and analyze training needs in support of the program.
2. Research, design, implement, schedule, and conduct training via lecture setting on health and wellness topics as well as instruct exercise classes.
3. Assist in developing, and implementing curricula, course outlines, instructional methods, training aids and methods, manuals, and other support material including but not limited to weight management, stress reduction, health risk management.
4. Maintain accurate and timely records on participants to support agency responsibilities and requirements.
5. Participate in solving training issues and ensure the effective utilization of modern training methods and techniques to support the program; and is an active participant in the program and trains by example.
6. Translate the latest scientific evidence into practical application in support of the fitness and wellness training program.
7. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
Education – Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree preferably in physical education, kinesiology, health promotion, exercise science, athletic training, nutrition or a related degree and enrollment in a graduate program preferred. Minimum qualifications include enrollment in an accredited four-year college or university Bachelor’s degree program, preferably in physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, health promotion, athletic training, nutrition or a related degree, and be within the last two semesters of the program.
Experience – Two (2) years or more experience in administering or instructing health, wellness, and/or strength and conditioning training programs in a training academy or fitness facility preferred.
Licensure and/or Certification – Must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.
Regulatory Knowledge – Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures. Design programs or training. Manage large groups of participants, both commissioned and non-commissioned. Knowledge of current exercise and nutrition terminology, technology, and techniques. Proven ability to design and implement training programs to support agency objectives and expectations.
Interpersonal Skills – Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers. Must demonstrate DPS’ core values: Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, and Teamwork.

Presentation/Communication Skills – Must be able to construct and deliver clear, concise, and professional presentations to a variety of audiences and/or individuals. Ability to make quick and accurate judgment calls regarding the need to provide information to agency personnel. Interpret, develop, and implement policies and procedures.
Research and Comprehension – Must demonstrate ability to quickly and efficiently access relevant information, and be able to utilize and/or present research and conclusions in a clear and concise manner.
Analytical Reasoning/Attention to Detail – Must demonstrate an ability to examine data/information, discern variations/similarities, and be able identify trends, relationships and causal factors, as well as grasp issues, draw accurate conclusions, and solve problems.
Technology – Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems. Knowledge of computer and empirical research methods and sources to obtain meaningful primary and secondary data regarding fitness and wellness. Confidentiality and Protected Information – Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations, and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information.
Safety – Must be able to work in safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.
Travel and/or Schedule – Position will be required to frequently travel locally and may be required to travel statewide.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change.
A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.
Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
