JOB SUMMARY: The overall purpose and general responsibilities of the job.
This position is responsible for learning and performing basic aspects of work with energized high voltage distribution lines, assisting in the installation, repair and maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution lines; control circuits for pumps and motors; and performing other work related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The fundamental duties and tasks that define the job.
- Learn and assists crews as instructed in performing construction, maintenance, and repairs on electrical overhead and underground distribution lines using specialized safety equipment.
- Learn and assists as instructed in routing or re-routing power lines over, under or around existing lines and structures, while working on the ground, or in close proximity to energized lines; uses rubber gloves, line hoses, mechanical jumpers, fiber guards, blankets and other protective devices as specified.
- Learn and observe proper safety precautions, particularly when working on or near energized circuits and with hazardous chemicals.
- Installs, removes, transfers, maintains, and/or repairs cross arms, pins, insulators, transformer and switch racks and other overhead pole and Underground Residential Distribution (U.R.D).
- Install and removed transformers, including primary and secondary current transformers and self-contained meters; cut-outs, disconnecting switches, circuit breakers and other overhead line and U.R.D devices, rigging block and tackle where necessary or working with ground crew and winch to raise or lower equipment.
- Perform line switching or sectionalizing; emergency repairs; phases and connects circuits under load; load checks and balances feeders as directed or required.
- Assists with meter reading
- Excavates and backfills trenches to complete repairs.
- Operates power tools, light construction equipment, ground maintenance equipment, and pickup truck.
- Operates medium to heavy equipment as needed, such as trencher, bucket truck, or backhoe.
- Cleans, organizes, and maintains tools and equipment.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum requirements for education and job related experience.
Graduation from high school or General Education Development Certificate
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Utilized in the performance of the essential functions.
- Ability to learn basic knowledge of electric operations
- Ability to safety work with energized or de-energized circuits, wires, and transformers
- Basic knowledge of proper care and operation of safety equipment and electric tools
- Knowledge of basic mathematics
- Ability to climb poles and work at moderate heights
- Ability to follow proper methods, procedures, and safety precautions of line work
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions
- Ability to safely operate digger truck, bucket truck, trencher and other equipment commonly used in the electric distribution field
- Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job
License and Certification
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
- Electric Line Worker Apprentice – 1 year of general labor exp.
- Electric Line I – Class C CDL Driver’s License +2 yrs. Related exp.
- Electric Line II – Class B CDL Driver’s License + 3 yrs. Related exp.
- Electric Line III – Class A CDL Driver’s License + 4 yrs. Related exp.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements associated with performance of the Essential Job Functions.
Physical requirements include frequently carrying/lifting 50 lbs., pushing or pulling 100 lbs.; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate small hand tools and construction equipment; subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform essential job functions.
