CDFW owns and manages public lands in areas with high threat of fire and received funding for efforts and activities dedicated to promoting healthy forests and landscapes by removing hazardous fuels. Activities to reduce risk include thinning vegetation, constructing fuel breaks, implementing controlled burns and conducting restoration work such as removing invasive fire-prone plants and establishing fire-resilient native plants.
Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist-Supervisor, the Environmental Services Intern (ESI) gains professional experience in the field of environmental science by assisting with plant, wildlife, and hydrologic surveys, data acquisitions, monitoring, data analysis and reporting, and various land management and maintenance tasks in support of wildfire resiliency and land management projects on various California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) properties for the benefit of wildlife, plants, unique habitats, and public safety. The ESI will prepare reports and make recommendations related to assigned tasks to gain experience in the methods and ethics of professional conduct and practice. The ESI may perform independent studies in areas of expertise associated with essential job functions under the lead of Environmental Scientists. Use of a telephone daily to contact the lead person when returning from the field as a safety check in/out process. Employee will summarize accomplishments and take photos to document work performed. Position is predominantly field based.

The Environmental Services Intern classification is a non-testing classification.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

Job is predominantly field based. Duties may occur under a wide variety of conditions including inclement weather. Physical strength and agility; ability to lift 40 pounds; ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain. The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff.
