Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking an experience Equipment Operator III for the Solid Waste division. The selected candidate will be assigned to the Tomoka Landfill located in Port Orange, Florida; and will be responsible for home fuel collection and performing onsite maintenance of used oil igloos and customer drop-off locations throughout the County.
NOTE: This position requires exposure to outdoor elements, fumes, dust, uneven ground, low/high temperatures, wet and/or high humidity.

Illustrative Duties

(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)

  • Operates fuel tanker truck.
  • Ensures fuel tanker truck components are in good working order (i.e. pumps, hoses, lift gates, etc.)
  • Operates skid steer and off road forklift.
  • Maintains used oil drop off locations throughout the County.
  • Maintains and repairs used oil igloo tanks and site conditions.
  • Collects home fuel oil from residents.
  • Assists Household Hazardous Waste sites as needed.
  • Works Household Hazardous Waste collection events throughout the year.
  • Maintains HAZWOPER certification.
  • Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
  • Performs routine service and maintenance.
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Completion of the eight (8) grade and three (3) years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy construction equipment.

Possession of a valid Florida CDL Class B driver’s license at time of hire and maintain thereafter.

A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

The preferred candidate,
having met the minimum requirements; will have a current and valid Florida CDL Class B or higher with Hazmat and Tanker endorsements.

Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of hire and maintain thereafter.

Possession of a Hazmat and Tanker endorsement within sixty (60) days of hire and maintain thereafter.

  • Thorough, demonstrated knowledge of the operation and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made.
  • Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skilled in the operation of complex construction equipment.

  • Able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
  • Able to work independently and manage work load efficiently.
  • Thorough, demonstrated knowledge and practice of customer service skills.
ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands: Ability to pull, push, lift, carry 50 pounds. Ability to perform essential duties and responsibilities and meet the minimum qualifications. Ability to lift, push (arm and leg), pull, reach, climb, visual acuity (depth perception and peripheral vision) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle; sit turn (neck and body), and handle. Physical requirement with regard to weight by division (lifting, carrying, pulling, etc.).

Environmental Demands: Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, poor ventilation.

Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, memos. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details. Ability to perform basic math.
