Job Description:
We are currently seeking a skilled and experienced Auto Body Prep Technician to join our high-performing collision repair team. As a Prep Technician, you will be responsible for preparing vehicles for paint by performing various surface preparation tasks to ensure a flawless finish. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of refinishing techniques, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality workmanship.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare vehicles for the painting process by masking, sanding, priming, and cleaning surfaces.
- Perform proper surface preparation including feather edging, blocking, and applying primer/filler as needed.
- Mask and tape vehicles accurately to protect unpainted surfaces during the painting process.
- Ensure all surfaces are clean, dust-free, and ready for painting.
- Work closely with painters and other technicians to ensure timely and accurate work flow.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the prep area and tools.
- Inspect completed prep work to ensure it meets quality and safety standards.
- Assist with minor disassembly and reassembly of vehicle components when required.
- Use proper safety equipment and follow all OSHA and shop safety regulations.
- Keep detailed records of materials used and time spent on each vehicle, if required.
Requirements:
- 2+ years of hands-on experience as an Auto Body Prep Technician or in a similar role.
- In-depth knowledge of sanding, masking, priming, and general body preparation techniques.
- Ability to identify and correct minor imperfections before painting.
- Familiarity with modern prep equipment, materials, and tools.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform physical tasks including standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications:
- I-CAR or ASE certifications (a plus, not required).
- Experience working in a high-volume collision repair facility.
- Familiarity with various paint systems (e.g., PPG, BASF, Sherwin-Williams).
