Who we are and what we do:

Responsible for managing and approving all journal entries, oversees certifying of quarterly account reconciliations, monitors, Commitment Accounting processes for semi- monthly payroll, and creates journals for distribution of unemployment premium charges for state agencies.

How you make a difference in this role:

Increase efficiency and enhance accuracy by practicing very detail oriented reviews of journal entries to mitigate re-work and ultimately result in accurate financial reports. Assume ownership of timely posting of all general ledger journal entries which provides efficient financial information supporting the financial decision-making needs of the state and helps ensure accurate financial reporting. Working collaboratively with other units to gain insights of the nature of general ledger activity. Maintain, improve and enhance documentation of ongoing risk management efforts which will help provide reasonable assurance that the objectives of the General Ledger section are met and make enterprise risk management (ERM) efforts an ongoing activity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviews statewide financial transactions and supporting documentation to assist in ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, state and federal laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Establishing and maintaining a variety of important and personal contacts with division staff, state agency financial staff and auditors explaining, interpreting and enforcing policies, accounting standards, deadlines and resolving errors and other problems.
  • Oversee the operations of the statewide general ledger team that includes ensuring continuity, accuracy and timeliness to achieve a high level of customer satisfaction and exceptional results.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting, or a related acceptable field with at least 24 semester hours in accounting and experience equivalent to five or more years of full-time professional fiscal services and/or auditing work including, at least, one year of experience in the supervision of fiscal and/or auditing staff.

OR

Qualifying full-time professional fiscal services and/or auditing experience may be substituted for the required education, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of four years (e.g., experience equivalent to one year of full-time work in professional fiscal services and/or auditing may substitute for one year of the required education).

OR

Current certification as a Certified Public Accountant or license as a Public Accountant with the State of Tennessee may substitute for the required bachelor's degree and one year of full-time professional fiscal services and/or auditing work, there being no substitution for the required supervisory experience.

OR

Additional graduate course work credit received from an accredited college or university in business administration, accounting or related acceptable field may substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis to a maximum of one year, there being no substitution for the required supervisory experience (e.g., an additional 36 graduate quarter hours in one or a combination of the above listed fields may substitute for one year of the required non-supervisory experience).
