GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety working level skilled and semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing, roofing, painting, mechanical, heating, air conditioning, janitorial tasks, and basic electrical trades work and technical tasks relative to assigned area(s) of responsibility of Hyrum City owned and operated buildings and facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform skilled facilities maintenance including carpentry, plumbing, roofing, painting, mechanical, heating, air conditioning, and electrical trades work.

Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required; order parts as necessary and ensure parts ordered are received in a timely fashion.

Provides support as needed to the Roads Department with snow removal, road maintenance, and cemetery including burials; and Water Department with installation and maintenance of water lines and being in a rotation schedule for on-call duties.

Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

Perform the full range of duties in the assigned area of work.

Maintain and repair City facilities, equipment, and buildings by performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and mechanical repair work.

Install, adjust, repair, and inspect heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment including forced air furnaces, water pumps, air conditioning units, exhaust fans, air filters, compressors, and heat exchangers.

Repair and replace plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets and pipes; clear obstructions from water and sewer lines.

Perform skilled level carpentry work including the construction, installation, remodeling and repairing of cabinets, partitions, walls, windows, doors, roofs, foundations, and other carpentry work.

Operate, maintain, and repair a variety of mechanical tools and equipment such as snowplows, lawn mowers, backhoe, and various hand tools required for carpentry, plumbing, and maintenance skills.

Performs seasonal functions including snow removal, snow plowing, and helps maintain sprinkler systems.

Troubleshoot and replace light bulbs, fixtures. • Repair and adjust locking mechanisms, doors, and door closers.

Read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.

Monitor and maintain preventive maintenance records and logs.

Provide facilities related support for various City events such as meeting set-up, employee lunches, offsite events, and other departmental requests.

Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from high school;

AND

  • Two (2) years of experience in skilled building maintenance or construction work;

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a facilities maintenance program. Knowledge of operational characteristics of heating systems, air conditioning systems, pumps, electrical and electronics systems, plumbing systems and operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the maintenance and repair of facilities. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices of several maintenance trades as they apply to maintenance and repair of structures, machinery, and equipment. Some knowledge budget practices and procedures; inventory control; light equipment maintenance and repair.

Skill in the operation, diagnosis, and repair for heating and air conditioning systems, pumps, minor electrical repairs, and maintenance and repair of facilities; Operation of various types of light equipment such as front end loader, tractor, backhoe, etc., basic mechanics, basic electrical and plumbing operations, basic carpentry.

Ability to Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time; perform responsible skilled maintenance and repair work with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision; Troubleshoot a variety of complex maintenance problems and accurately determine project material needs and recommended purchases; exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; develop effective working relationships with supervisor, subordinates, and the public

  • Special Qualifications:

Must be able to move objects weighing up to 100 Ibs.

Must work on a twenty-four (24) hour stand-by or on call.

Must possess a valid Utah State Driver's License.

Must be available for 24 hour call out.

Must be a Certified Water Systems Operator II within two years of employment.

Successful completion of a comprehensive background check and pre-employment drug screening required.

  • Work Environment:

Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking, hearing, and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, complex thinking. Occasional local travel required in normal course of job performance.
