Job Title: Quality Inspector
Reports to: Quality Manager
FSLA Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: The mechanical inspector ensures that machined part meet internal and customer quality standards throughout the manufacturing process. This role involves inspecting components during various stages of the machining process to detect deviations from specifications, preventing defects from continuing downstream in production. The position requires attention to detail, a strong understanding of engineering drawings and specifications, and the ability to operate precision measurement instruments.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform dimensional and visual inspections on machined components during and after production operations.
  • Verify parts meet engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines), optical comparators, and gauges, to measure dimensions, tolerances, and material properties.
  • Monitor in-process controls through the online control plans to ensure machine operators are completing the required data collection during the machining process.
  • Document inspection results in accordance with the quality management system (QMS).
  • Identify and document any defects or non-conformances. Ensure proper documentation of non-conformities in line with company procedures.
  • Collaborate with machinists, engineers, and quality personnel to resolve inspection-related issues and improve quality.
  • Ensure proper use and all measuring instruments and testing equipment are calibrated and maintained according to company standards and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation traceability.
  • Assists internal stakeholders with the proper set-up and operation of inspection equipment.
  • Work closely with engineering, production, and quality assurance teams to communicate issues and propose solutions to improve product quality.
  • Support internal and external audits as needed.
  • Interpret complex blueprints, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), and work instructions.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required, technical certification or associate degree in manufacturing, machining, or quality a plus.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in quality control or inspection within the aerospace or manufacturing industry.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers, CMM), blueprint reading, and knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality systems.
  • Proficient with inspection tools and measurement techniques.
  • Working knowledge of First Article Inspection (FAI).
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to document inspection results and communicate effectively with team members.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform detailed visual and hands-on inspections.

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and associated software (e.g., PC-DMIS, Zeiss Calypso).
  • Experience with vision systems: Programming and operating a Keyence and Micro View.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) or similar quality-related certification is a plus.
