Under supervision of medical staff, to perform technical and clerical support tasks in assisting physicians and patients relative to a variety of gastroenterologic medical procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic.

O'Connor Hospital - O'Connor Hospital (OCH) is a 358 licensed bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to residents of Santa Clara County. It was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in the county. OCH has grown significantly over the past five years in both its inpatient volume and its Emergency Department visits. Along with these volume increases other ancillary and clinical departments like imaging, lab, pharmacy, and respiratory have seen growth as well.
St. Louise Regional Hospital - Since 1989, St. Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH) has been caring for the residents in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient medical specialties. SLRH has 93 beds, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, SLRH maintains a CALSTAR 2 emergency helicopter base on the premises.
Regional Medical Center– Regional Medical Center (RMC) is a 258-bed hospital that is the main emergency healthcare provider for East San José, treating a wide range of critical and life-threatening conditions for more than 60 years. Since the SCVH integration of RMC effective 4/1/25, RMC has expanded the critical services including Level II trauma, Thrombectomy capable Stroke Center and STEMI care, and has been seeing an increased number of emergency visits and inpatient volume.

Typical Tasks
- Prepares exam rooms or patient's rooms on wards for a variety of different gastroenterology procedures;
-
Explains a variety of gastroenterology procedures to patients and instructs and assists them in preparation for procedures;
-
Checks patient chart for required documentation prior to procedures;
-
Assists physicians during gastroenterology procedures;
-
Assists patients and observes their reactions and signs during procedures;
-
Inserts, advances, and withdraws endoscopes and snares under physician's instructions;
-
Assists in obtaining biopsies, specimens, and cultures;
-
Mark-orients and/or labels biopsies, specimens, and cultures and takes them to the laboratory;
-
Instructs patients on follow-up regimens;
-
Screens phone calls for the nature and urgency of the complaint and refers them elsewhere, as appropriate;
-
Calls for and picks up lab and radiology test results and files them into patient charts;
-
Fills out lab slips and assists patients in filling out billing information forms;
-
Enters billing information on computer terminal or sends it to Professional Group;
-
Arranges with vendors for replacement and repair of equipment and instruments;
-
Orders supplies;
-
Calls for patient charts; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards
Training and work experience sufficient to enable a candidate to demonstrate the following kinds of knowledge and abilities:
Note: A candidate normally would acquire the qualifications listed below for this classification through experience and training equivalent to one of the following combinations:
1. One year of experience in a hospital in a position equivalent to SCVMC's Clinic Clerk, Medical Unit Clerk, or Hospital Services Assistant II, and successful completion of a course for Gastroenterology Assistants offered by the American Society of Gastroenterology Assistants
- OR -
2. Two years of experience in a class equivalent to one of the above in a variety of patient care areas and six months as a Gastroenterology Technician Trainee at VMC or in an equivalent training program.
Knowledge of:
-
Gastroenterology diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including upper and lower endoscopies, biopsies, motilities, lavages, function tests, specimen taking, and cultures;

Gastroenterology equipment and its uses including a variety of endoscopes, biopsy instruments, snares, video machine, and suction machine;
-
Hospital organization and services;
-
Hospital billing procedures;
-
Office practices and procedures.
Ability to:

Assist physicians and patients during gastroenterology procedures and manipulate the required instruments with skill, accuracy, and sensitivity;
-
Communicate effectively with and calm patients under varying degrees of stress;
-
Screen and refer calls to appropriate other hospital or health care service;
- Organize and prioritize the clerical work of a small clinic type office with a moderate to high volume of patient visits.
