Overview
The Nutrition Specialist is responsible for the on-going development, implementation, and monitoring of nutrition related activities for the WCCA Head Start Program. This position ensures that all aspects of the nutrition service area are conducted in compliance with all Head Start Program Performance Standards, DHS regulations, MDE regulations, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and WCCA Policies. This position will work 32 hours per week during the school year, and have 7 weeks off during the summer.
Duties
- Prepare and implement a comprehensive nutrition education program to meet the needs of children and families and adhere to the Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS), USDA regulations, and other applicable guidelines.
- Develop policies and procedures, create menus, monitor food preparation and handling, and ensure compliance with Head Start's nutrition standards and USDA regulations.
- Review participant health and nutrition data, identify participants at risk, and refer for appropriate services.
- Follow up on any participant with specific nutritional needs, food allergies or food intolerances.
- Collaborate with staff and parents to promote healthy eating habits and provide support and guidance on nutrition issues.
- Provide training and education to staff and families on nutrition issues, including Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines and Civil Rights.
- Work with other professionals, including food service managers and contracted nutritionists, to support nutrition services.
- Assist with selection of supply vendors, and coordinate supply procurement and delivery.
- Review and maintain all nutrition-related documentation required by funders and necessary to program operations.
- Provide support to the Health and Mental Health Services Advisory Committee.
- Assist Head Start Health Coordinator with hearing and vision screenings, as assigned.
- Assist Head Start Director with food service contracts.
- Coordinate with the WCCA food shelf to oversee participation in and implementation of the backpack food program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or Dietetics or a related field.
- Certification as a Registered Dietitian (RD) preferred.
- Experience in nutrition related activities such as food service, menu planning, meal service monitoring, nutrition assessment and nutrition education.
- Experience working in an early childhood setting, or with food & nutrition program preferred.
Job Types: Part-time, Contract
Pay: $24.70 - $29.42 per hour
