Job Summary

The International Student Advisor II serves as a high-level, cross-functional support position in the areas of the Office of International Programs, including international student and scholar services, study abroad, Intensive English Language Program (IELI), and passport services.

Requirement: Must be a U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident, as required to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), as required by federal regulations.


Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and maintain current and up-to date knowledge of immigration laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Takes lead in performing administrative tasks necessary to support SEVIS compliance, including monitoring and adjudicating internally generated SEVIS reports.
  • Communicate with federal agencies regarding immigration for international students.
  • Actively participate in the development and growth of team expertise in the laws and regulations governing international students and in advising/informing university stake holders about university policies and procedures that ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Ensure proper understanding and application of immigration regulations and university policies, taking appropriate initiative and exercising discretion within the scope of assigned duties.
  • Accurately maintain all aspects of international student records with minimal supervision.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff on development of training workshops and informational sessions on issues for international students, faculty, and staff.
  • Actively support the critical priorities the Office of International Programs, serve on committees, and participate in working groups to support the mission of the University.
  • Advise prospective, continuing, and former international students on complex immigration regulations.
  • Participate in international student recruitment initiatives.
  • Develop and coordinate activities and programs for OIP.
  • Updates the website, assists with development and revision of rules and procedures, and prepare reports.
  • Serve as a passport agent.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) year of experience in academic advising or related field.


Preferred Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience within international education and immigration advising, specifically in an international office or in a college or university setting.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
