Interpreters (tour guides) are the face of Montpelier and represent The Montpelier Foundation in its interactions with the public. Candidates selected for the Interpreter position present thoughtful, accurate, and engaging tours. They are lifelong learners who enjoy sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with guests. They maintain the highest standards of professionalism and customer service at all times. They are responsible for the safety of Montpelier visitors in the House, during tours and special events. While on duty, Interpreters are responsible for the protection of the House and its objects. They participate in House logistics and Visitor Services operations to ensure efficient visitor flow and gracious hospitality.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead guided tours for visitors of all ages using engaging and inclusive interpretive practices.
Deliver K-12 student tours and family-friendly programming.
Communicate historical narratives with accuracy, clarity, and enthusiasm, covering Montpelier?s people, place, and national significance.
Learn and present multiple tour formats and program offerings.
Participate in special programs, events, and off-site education initiatives.
Assist with guest services at the Visitor Center, including visitor orientation, ticket sales, and basic hospitality.
Help ensure visitor safety and protect historic structures and collections.
Attend ongoing training to expand historical knowledge, interpretive techniques, and customer service skills.
Support departmental needs during off-season and assist with Montpelier?s 250th anniversary programming and digital content.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma required; college coursework in history, education, or related fields preferred.
Commitment to telling a full, accurate history and connecting past to present.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; friendly and professional demeanor.
Ability to work weekends, holidays, and special events.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Strong time management and adaptability in a fast-paced setting.
Successful completion of Montpelier?s interpreter training program (provided).
Ability to pass background and reference checks.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lead walking tours for extended periods, including stairs and uneven terrain.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, and light lifting (up to 40 lbs.)
Ability to speak clearly to groups of 20+ and use two-way radios effectively.
