Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Journeyman Lineman with the Electric Department. This position is responsible for the installation and maintenance of electrical power systems, street lighting systems, airport electrical systems and devices unique to a municipal system.
Examples of Duties
- Operates bucket or derrick truck, puller tensioner, air compressor, puller and other equipment.
- Learns the core and use of tools of the trade: phasing sticks, phase rotation, meggers, etc.
- Uses and cares of hot line tools and rubber goods.
- Installs and maintains overhead and underground feeders as well as replace poles, cross arms, lightening arrestors, insulators and fused disconnects and switches.
- Participates in the stand-by trouble call rotation.
- Builds and troubleshoot three phase transformer banks and three phase pad mount transformers.
- Assists in inventory control.
- Learns and performs first aid and CPR as required.
- Attends department safety meetings.
- Take written and oral exams to prove work competence.
- Learns OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269.
- Maintain City vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working condition.
- Attend any additional trainings and/or certifications required by supervisor.
- Serve as crew leaders when Foreman are not around and as required.
- Scheduled for on-call rotation.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill in safely covering up and gloving distribution and sub-transmission circuits up to and including 35KV, locating and correcting defects in electrical systems and equipment. Skill in the use of grounding equipment and devices used on high voltage systems. Knowledge of the National Electric Safety codes and practices. Knowledge in the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate with city employees, officials and the general public.
Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. Completion of a U.S. Department of Labor and Kansas Human Resources apprenticeship program including 8,000 hours of instruction. Over three years of experience as a Line Maintainer or related field. Valid Kansas CDL driver’s license required within 6 months of employment.
Supplemental Information
Environment: Works in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e., extreme, moderate and temperate cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust and dry conditions.
Physical Characteristics: Ability to lift up to 75lbs. on a regular basis, pull, push, stretch, spread, bend, kneel, climb, reach, walk, sit, stand, hear, listen, jump, drive, operate equipment.
