Department Description


Under general direction, the Lead Sheet Metal Roof Repairman performs lead supervisory work involving the participating in and assigning, directing and inspecting the efforts of crews composed of Sheet Metal and Roof Repairman II, Sheet Metal and Roof Repairman I, Welder II and Trades Helpers engaged in roofing and sheet metal repairs, fencing and playground equipment repairs and welding repairs.

Work assignments and job standards are the responsibility of the Building Maintenance Foreman II; however, the incumbent must use independent judgment in assigning, scheduling, estimating, inspecting and participating in the trade areas involved.? Assignments are received in written and verbal format and are subject to review for compliance with instructions and requests.? This class differs from Sheet Metal and Roof Repairman II by the wider scope of supervisory responsibilities and administrative tasks to be accomplished.

Detailed Description


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Makes necessary repairs to damaged roofs;

  • Lays out, cuts, solders and installs gutters, down spouts and other sheet metal fixtures;

  • Repairs lockers, builds, replaces or installs drain pipes, ventilators, air conditioning and heating ducts and related sheet metal products;

  • Operates shop tools necessary to fabricate sheet metal objects;

  • Assigns work orders to crews;

  • Reviews and checks time sheets and work orders for accuracy and correctness;

  • Assigns crews in response to emergency situations;

  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions;

  • Ability to relate to other tradesmen and school personnel;

  • Acts for the Sheet Metal/Roofing Master Foreman in his absence;

  • Performs or assists in performing the difficult or skilled tasks;

  • Trains and instructs subordinates; and

  • Performs related work as required.


Job Requirements


The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Thorough knowledge of standard tools, equipment and practices of the roofing and sheet metal trade and welding, fencing and playground equipment trade areas;

  • Good knowledge of construction and repair procedures used in building and repair of roofs;

  • Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, and oral or written orders, skill in the use and care of tools; knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade areas involved;

  • Ability to assign work, supervise and carry a job through to completion;

  • Good knowledge of tools, equipment and materials of the trades areas involved, dependability; and

  • Good physical condition.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of a standard high school or vocational school course; supervisory experience at the level of Sheet Metal and Roof Repairman II, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince George's County Public Schools' Bulleting A026-85 dated October 8, 1984).

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises the work of crews composed of Sheet Metal and Roof Repairmen II, Sheet Metal and Roof Repairmen I, Welder II, and Trades Helpers.

While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments.? The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
