The City of Urbana, Ohio is accepting applications for the full-time position of Legal Assistant/Victim Advocate at $20.00 per hour. This position reports directly to the Law Director and is partially grant-funded.
The Legal Assistant/Victim Advocate provides clerical, administrative, and advocacy support to the Law Department, attorneys, and victims of crime. This role involves preparing case files and evidence for court proceedings, managing confidential information, responding to inquiries from the public, and assisting victims through the judicial process.
Key responsibilities include:
- Establishes and maintains filing systems; enters and organizes case notes.
- Assists attorneys in preparing for arraignments, pre-trials, motion hearings, and trials.
- Verifies factual information and manages confidential records using various software tools.
- Responds to inquiries from employees, citizens, attorneys, and Municipal Court staff.
- Provides victim advocacy services after referral by law enforcement, including: Ensuring victims are aware of their rights under Ohio law; Explaining judicial processes and court procedures; Keeping victims and witnesses informed of court dates and case updates; Conveying victim concerns to the Court, including requests for protection orders and damages; Accompanying victims to court and providing referrals for support services.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities:
- Sensitivity and strong communication skills when working with crime victims.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills; ability to remain composed in stressful situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement, court staff, and community organizations.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Willingness to attend relevant seminars and workshops.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent; specialized coursework in office practices preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of job-related experience (victim advocacy and/or paralegal experience preferred).
- Must complete Ohio Attorney General’s Office victim advocacy training upon hire.
