LIBRARY ASSISTANT I


SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision, assists a Certified Librarian in the performance of fundamental library services and maintenance duties. Incumbent performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class work under the direct supervision of a Certified Librarian and are normally at a middle or high school. Employees in this class perform a number of fundamental and closely related duties according to established procedures.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Develops a climate that encourages teachers and students to make optimum use of the school library media center. Cooperates with the Librarian in providing an attractive library environment through book displays, exhibits and bulletin boards. Assists in the operation of library automation system to manage circulation of books and materials. May assist students in using library technology to locate resources and reading materials, instructing library skills in the process. Assist to maintain discipline of students. May assist teachers in the selection of library materials and electronic resources that will best suit their needs. May select or assist in the selection of materials to be ordered. May assist in the monitoring of the budget. May assist in the updating material and patron records in the library automation system. May assist with textbook management. Assists in the annual inventory of materials, verifies records, mends books and materials, shelves and files library materials, and performs related clerical activities and housekeeping as required. May train and supervise student and parent volunteers.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and experience would be:

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma;

AND

  • Six (6) months of experience that would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the class.

Applicants hired by the District to work at a Title I designated school, must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed the following requirements: Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or, obtained an associate's degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or, passed the ParaPro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460.

Knowledge of: Reading, writing and general business math; routine clerical, library cataloging and classification procedures; reference works; reader interest level according to age and ability of students; library material selection; familiarity with computer operations; familiarity with the use of the Internet for research.

Skill at: Working with students and operating effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions; maintaining detailed and accurate records and reports; utilizing and explaining library materials and technology, including the use of online card catalogs, references and other resources; classifying library materials; communicating effectively in verbal and written form; following verbal and written instructions directions; and working effectively with faculty, staff, students and parents.

LIBRARY ASSOCIATE I

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision of a certified librarian, performs technical library services and maintenance duties. Incumbent performs related work as required.

Assists in the planning, organizing and implementation of library programs. Assists in the selection of library materials and equipment for purchase. Under direction of the school librarian, updates material and patron records in the library automation system, removes outdated and worn materials, assists in or conducts annual inventory and prepares reports as required. Prepares bibliographies, book reviews, and assists in selection of materials for purchase as directed by the librarian. Assists in the operation of the library automation system. May assist with textbook management.

Assists the librarian in teaching students and staff how to utilize the library effectively, including the use of online catalog stations, the Internet and other electronic information sources. Re-shelves or re-files any returned materials. Prepares bulletin boards, book displays and exhibits to produce an attractive library environment. Performs related clerical and housekeeping activities as required. May assist in monitoring of the budget. May train and supervise student and parent volunteers. Assist to maintain discipline.

Assists in providing general library orientation programs for students and staff, and under the direction of the school librarian, suggests and recommends materials for supplementing classroom activities and lessons. Helps schedule and coordinate library use with teachers. Assist to provide interesting library programs such as book talks, storytelling, media/computer presentations and any other activities designed to attract students to the library media center and encourage reading.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and experience would be:

  • Equivalent to two (2) years of college (48 semester credits) from an accredited college or university, including 21 semester hours in a District-recognized librarianship program (a combination of university and up to nine in-service credit hours is acceptable);

Knowledge of: Principles and procedures of library operation; current practices in librarianship, including cataloging and classification systems, Information Literacy Standards, district library policies and accounting procedures and reporting practices; familiarity with the use of the Internet for research; principles of teaching; knowledge of use of library technology; and computer operation is required.

Skill at: Communicating effectively with students, parents, teachers and other district personnel in either verbal or written form; maintaining discipline and orderly conduct of students; utilizing and explaining library materials and technology; working effectively with all people in the work setting; creating a positive atmosphere for all library users; encouraging and engaging students in reading, viewing, and listening for understanding and enjoyment; assisting the librarian to plan and organize meaningful activities and programs for the students and staff.

New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step (step one) of the grade of the position. Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. View salary schedules here.

This is a 35 hour per week, 185 day position.

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

The job offer is conditional until a report is returned from the FBI and Nevada Department of Public Safety that meets the standards of WCSD for employment purposes.
