GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Lifeguard is responsible for the safety of members, program participants and patrons using the Aberdeen Family YMCA Aquatic Center. Under the supervision of the Aquatic Director, this position maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas. The position serves as a representative of the YMCA by providing quality customer service, while meeting all standards and expectations. Create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Must be a minimum of 15 years old.
- Current Lifeguard Training Certification.
- Current CPR-PR (CPR for Professional Rescuer) Certification. (Contact the Y to find out how to get this certification!)
- Current First Aid Certification.
- Qualified candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge of water safety, rescue methods and first-aid practices and techniques.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions are those tasks, duties, and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the job’s purpose and objectives. Essential functions are critical or fundamental to the performance of the job. They are the major functions for which the person in the job is held accountable. ALL HOURS/SHIFTS ARE AVAILABLE! Flexible scheduling.
Hours will vary (early morning, daytime, evenings and weekends)
Completes opening and closing procedures per assigned shifts.
Maintains active surveillance of the pool area while on duty to ensure safety of pool area and patrons.
Follows required Aquatic Emergency Action Plan (EAP). Training provided upon hire.
Is prepared to effectively communicate and enforce all YMCA rules and policies.
Keeps accurate records as required (chemicals, swim tests, usage, etc.) and reports any necessary pool maintenance through appropriate procedures.
Ability to demonstrate mature judgement and sound decision-making.
Provides written reports on all incidents/accidents.
Keeps required certifications current and provides copy of current certifications to supervisor.
Attends required in-service training and meetings.
Conducts patron swimming test to assess ability to swim independently and unattended.
Greet patrons, develop positive relations and maintain a fun, controlled, safe environment for swimming. Ability to create and maintain positive relationships with others.
Promote and incorporate the YMCA’s mission, four core values and areas of focus.
Complete other duties as assigned.
