Overview
Youth Services and Programs is a division that manages city-wide programming, outreach, grants, collaborations, and special projects in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment. The focus of the Summer Literacy Outreach Specialistis to provide on-site programming and support to participating summer camps. The Free Library works with the Office of Children and Families to provide books, materials, and curriculum to integrate literacy-rich activities into existing camp programs. The Literacy Outreach Specialists will work directly with summer camp site directors and frontline staff to help ensure high quality, literacy-rich environments, and integrated literacy activities. Literacy Outreach Specialists will work up to 20 hours per week for a period of 9 weeks, between June and August. The anticipated dates of employment are June 16 - August 15. This is a part-time, seasonal position.
Duties
- Attending the initial training to become familiar with the literacy curriculum and best practices for supporting sites
- Assisting with trainings for camp staff, to be held at the Free Library of Philadelphia and/or at camp sites
- Communicating regularly with camp staff about curriculum, programming, organization, and related topics
- Visiting sites during the camp day to provide programming and support on implementing the curriculum, which includes read-alouds, journaling and other writing, along with literacy-based games and activities
- Answering questions about programs, curriculum, and best practices for infusing literacy into daily camp activities
- Communicating with neighborhood libraries about camps and daycares that you are working with and facilitating relationships, as necessary
- Working with camp leadership to assure implementation of the literacy program components
- Submitting weekly reports documenting site visit activities and observations
- Attending periodic meetings for updates, peer-support, and to provide feedback to inform program quality improvement
Requirements
- Must possess a BA/BS degree in a relevant field like education
- Experience working with children in either a classroom setting or less formal environment like a summer camp or after school program
- Experience working with literacy programs or leading literacy instruction strongly preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, both written and oral
- Ability to work collaboratively with camp site staff and respond to their needs

- Must pass required criminal background and child abuse clearances
