Job Overview
The Math Specialist provides expert attention to the needs of students in the area of mathematics and supports teachers in the implementation of effective mathematics instruction.
Roles and Responsibilities
The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.
- Assesses the mathematics strengths and needs of students, provide that information to parents and educational staff, and use the results to support the planning and implementation of an effective mathematics intervention program for the students.
- Coordinates the administration of mathematics assessments, examine the use of data from the assessments, and monitor student progress.
- Provides mathematics intervention to students who need support.
- Supports, supplements, and extends classroom teaching to implement a quality mathematics program that meets the needs of students and work with teachers, support staff, and school administrators to facilitate the coordination of the mathematics program with the full curriculum.
- Leads professional development in mathematics, provide information on conceptual development of mathematics, model strategies or techniques, conduct demonstration or collaborative lessons, and coach or mentor teachers.
- Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum standards in mathematics.
- Completes math department training as requested, including Math Workshop training.
- Attends bimonthly math department collaboration meetings to provide aligned services and resources for teachers and students in the area of mathematics.

Education
Bachelor’s degree
Experience
Three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of mathematics was a responsibility
Licenses and Certifications
Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement as a Mathematics Specialist preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of current research and best practices in the field of reading

Qualifications
- Graduation from high school and experience working with children in some employment capacity.
- Good computer hardware and software skills including web-based applications and basic tech knowledge
- Knowledge of and/or experience with Google Suite products
- Adept at learning new technologies
- Excellent problem solving skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work under the supervision of other school employees to address tech concerns/issues, follow lesson plans, record data, and verbally describe scholars’ progress and difficulties.
- Work effectively with individual children and small groups.
- Ability to take initiative in recognizing an immediate need and meeting it without specific instructions.
- Physical ability to lift, position, and assist scholars as required.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and audiovisual equipment.
- Good human relations and communications skills; patience and flexibility.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the IFT (Tech), teachers and/or the school principal:
- Provide basic technical support for using computer accessories and computer software programs
- Provide basic tech support to teachers, staff and students based on needs, including troubleshooting
- Prepare work tickets related to technology and maintenance needs
- Prepare classroom materials and perform clerical duties.
- Provide instructional support as the classroom teacher in the daily management of the classrooms.
- Provide coverage for classes
- Provide instructional support to scholars in the classroom and during “special” classes.
- Provide basic office support
- Assist scholars with personal medical, hygiene, and physical care needs as required.
- Supervise scholars in and around the school as needed (for instance, during recess, the lunch period, and at arrival to and dismissal from school).
- Help the teachers and principal with the physical arrangement, technology setup/operation, and cleanup of classrooms and other school spaces.
- Other duties as assigned.
