Mission District Young Musicians Program Instructor/Winds Coach
Community Music Center seeks an instructor to form part of the faculty team that teaches in the Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP), a tuition-free program offering comprehensive music education with a focus on Latin music.
The ideal candidate will be bilingual (Spanish/English), have knowledge of winds instruments (trumpet, saxophones, clarinet, flute) and experience and knowledge of Latin music styles, possess a high level of musicianship, work well with teenagers and a faculty team.
Each class includes large group rhythm work, sectionals and large ensemble rehearsal. This opening is for a rhythm section coach who would be responsible for teaching rhythm section sectionals and forming part of the faculty team to develop and teach music theory, instruction of large group rehearsals, performances, planning and evaluation.

Mission District Young Musicians Program The award-winning Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP), founded in 2007, offers a comprehensive music education with a focus on Latin music. This tuition free program primarily serves Latino youth from the Mission District who are nominated by their public school music teachers and community organizations. The curriculum focuses on music of Latin America and is taught by bilingual (Spanish/English) instructors. Group classes take place at the Community Music Center (544 Capp Street, SF, CA) each Saturday during the school year and private lessons can take place at either CMC branch. Students perform several times each year at CMC and off-site locations.
Schedule: Saturdays from 9:30am-12:00pm, throughout the school year. Other hours will be required for performances and meetings.
Requirements:
- Bilingual (Spanish/English).
- Knowledge of Latin music styles such as boleros, cumbias, rancheras, banda, cha cha cha and Cuban son.
- Knowledge of winds instruments (trumpet, saxophones, clarinet, flute)
- Ability to interact and motivate teenage singers with different levels of experience and learning styles.
- Prior experience teaching, particularly with youth highly desired
- Knowledge of Finale software is a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Conducting sectionals for rhythm section or other instruments as needed.
- Assisting with arrangements as needed.
- Arriving at 9:30 AM to help with the set-up, teaching from 9:45 am - 11:45 noon and staying for a 15 minute faculty debrief/planning session, leaving at 12:00 PM.
- Supporting MDYMP faculty with the class set up and break down process.
- Playing with the full ensemble and supporting it.
- Working with a small group of students separately or individual students if needed.
- Addressing discipline issues as needed as part of the faculty team.
- Participating in the program’s activities and supporting them.
- Participating in all performances
- Attending MDYMP Faculty meetings 3 or 4 times a year.
- Giving feedback on program structure, curriculum, repertoire and progress.
- Evaluating students.
- Auditioning new students.
- Giving feedback on recruitment.
- Communicating with the MDYMP Coordinator.
Compensation: $68.80/hour. Additional opportunities are available for compensated performances and meetings, free practice room and studio rental as available.
