Accountability:

Director of Clinical Nursing

Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsible for daily patient care and flow and performing technical ophthalmic procedures, measurement and tests to provide physician data. Must be willing to help in all areas and understand the need for efficient use of time.

List of Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Efficiently and accurately interviews patient and documents medical history.
  • Conducts and records various tests:
    • Central visual acuity
    • Measure afferent pupillary defect
    • Measures eye pressure with tonopen and pneumo
    • Measures blood pressure
    • Appropriate dilation
  • Promptly and professionally assists the doctor in patient care.
  • Recognizes signs and symptoms of eye diseases.
  • Communicates with patients regarding follow-up care, procedures, changes in symptoms, etc.
  • Maintains and cleans all equipment being used, and reports to nurse/clinical supervisor if not in working condition.
  • Review medical record for labs or test results ordered at previous visit; obtain if not in NexTech
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Monitors supplies in screening rooms regularly.

Minimum Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED

Minimum Background Requirements

  • Previous experience or training in this position or similar position is beneficial, but not required.

Minimum Demonstrated Skills:

  • Efficiently and accurately interviews patients and documents histories.
  • Consistently works with three patients per hour.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms and ocular meds.
  • Has a working understanding of fundus photos, nerve fiber analysis and fluorescein angiography.
  • Utilizes proper eyedrop technique and sterility.
  • Understands and uses proper sterile techniques.
  • Utilizes proper universal precaution procedures.
  • Understands and follows procedures for procedural consents.
  • Displays consistent professionalism.
  • Is energetic and empathetic with patients.
  • Consistently checks with late scribe/nurse prior to leaving at end of day when scheduled as late screener.
  • Consistently closes screening room at the end of the day.
  • Consistently displays positive rapport with fellow employees.
  • Cooperates with supervisory staff and physicians.
  • Understands role in the team’s effort.
  • Is available to doctor when needed.
  • Scribes readily when doctor desires.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in job assignment.
  • Takes pride and ownership in success and image of Retina Consultants, PLLC
  • Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals.
  • Maintains certification, if obtained.

Additional Information:

  • Travel to satellite offices will be required – when hired in the Charleston office.
  • Provide support for staff in satellite offices.
  • Perform Ophthalmic Assistant duties as required.
  • Displays consistent professionalism.
  • Interacts with fellow employees in a way that promotes harmony and cooperation.
  • Demonstrates regard for the dignity and respect of all patients, family members, and coworkers.
  • Communicate with patients and coworkers.
  • Maintains proper attendance and punctuality.
  • Consistent and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient information at all times.
  • Follow HIPAA Policies and Procedures outlined in Privacy Manual.

Physical Demands:

  • Lifting, bending, twisting, standing and walking.
  • Must be able to write/type.
  • Must be able to hold arms at shoulder height.
  • Must be able to communicate via phone.
  • Must have manual dexterity to work with ophthalmic equipment.
