Responsibilities:
Perform core nursing assistant duties including assisting with ADLs (bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, repositioning), vital signs, weights, I&O, point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose), telemetry application, specimen collection, dressing changes, restraint management, bladder scans, and patient transport.
Report equipment issues promptly and maintain effective communication across departments.
Provide exceptional patient care by assisting with procedures, therapies, and daily activities, while delivering clear feedback to RNs and reporting patient status changes.
Educate patients and families under RN supervision; apply and monitor restraints as needed per protocol.
Demonstrate cultural awareness, promote workplace safety, and foster respectful, professional relationships with patients and team members.
Comply strictly with hospital policies, safety standards, and documentation requirements.
High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Enrollment in a nursing program with one of the following:
- 1 year of general healthcare experience, or
- 6 months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with Patient Care Technician competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, or
- Completion of at least one nursing program clinical rotation
Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire
Basic information system training completed
Microcomputer experience preferred
Strong oral and written communication skills
Medication access limited to nurse distribution
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR certification per AHA standards (didactic and skills demonstration) within 30 days of hire; ACLS preferred
Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCM) training required within 60 days of hire and annually thereafter
Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification
Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting (with renewal)
Act 33 and Act 34 clearances (with renewal)
Act 73 FBI Clearance (with renewal)
